4 potential trades the Carolina Panthers could make after June 1
By Dean Jones
Zach Ertz – TE
- 2021 team – Philadelphia Eagles
It is something of a surprise that Zach Ertz is still with the Philadelphia Eagles after practically saying his goodbyes at the end of the season. The tight end has made no secret of his desire for a fresh start elsewhere and providing there is a willing suitor, expect to see a little more activity post-June 1 due to the savings involved.
The Eagles will be saving $8.5 million if they choose to trade Ertz, which comes with a dead-cap figure of $4.22 million. This is a lot more enticing for both only Philadelphia but also for another team looking to acquire one of the best pass-catching tight ends in the business.
There is a small matter of health issues to consider where Ertz is concerned.
The former Stanford star managed 11 games in 2020 but looked a shell of his former self and clearly wasn’t 100 percent, so the Carolina Panthers would need to be completely convinced he’s worth a risk if they opt to go down this route.
They might be keen to see what their new starting tight-end duo of Dan Arnold and third-round pick Tommy Tremble can do before making such a move.
Both come into the organization with a tremendous amount of upside and seem to complement each other well. But it’s hard to look at Ertz’s production over the years and not think he’d be an upgrade.
