Carolina Panthers have an exciting secondary

If the Carolina Panthers had any lingering doubts as to how well their secondary can adapt after so many changes, their efforts during the early offseason program leave plenty of reasons to be encouraged.

Getting off the field on third down was a frustrating aspect of Carolina’s overall performance in 2020. This is something that’s clearly been addressed by those in power during free agency and the 2021 NFL Draft, which saw the right blend of youth and experience brought into the fold in pursuit of progression.

Matt Rhule got a true glimpse of just how special this unit can be over a dominant couple of days during mandatory minicamp. There were some electric plays from skill position players on the backend and if this can transition to game day, the sky is the limit for this defense.

The likes of Donte Jackson, Jaycee Horn, and A.J. Bouye should solidify the cornerback room. Couple this with Carolina’s intent to move Jeremy Chinn back to his preferred position of safety, and all the ingredients are there for a steep upturn in their fortunes.

It’s a strong start. But no more than that.

What comes next for the secondary will be crucial, although Rhule cannot help but be excited about what they can all provide in 2021 and possibly beyond.
