Nobody steps up in Curtis Samuel’s absence

Once wide receiver Curtis Samuel went over 1,000 all-purpose yards in 2020, it was going to be difficult for the Carolina Panthers to keep him around. Had the salary cap not gone down significantly due to COVID-19 revenue losses things might have been different, but the choice between the former Ohio State star and Taylor Moton was an easy one to make.

Samuel eventually decided to link up with former head coach Ron Rivera with the Washington Football Team once again in free agency. The money he signed for was never going to be matched by the Panthers, so they now need others to step up and fill the void.

If they cannot, then it’s going to have some negative ramifications.

Christian McCaffrey’s return to full health will take some of the pressure off. But if the likes of David Moore, Terrace Marshall Jr., or Shi Smith don’t provide an immediate contribution, the pressure will be on D.J. Moore and Robby Anderson to exceed the heights attained last season.

Samuel’s ability to impact proceedings all over the field was a massive asset for Carolina. He’s only going to get better in Washington with more responsibility on his shoulders, so fans could be casting some envious glances in his direction in the coming months.

This is all part of the business, obviously. One man’s departure means a big chance for another.

Taking advantage of this is another matter entirely.
