4 critical observations from Cam Newton’s performance at the Bills
By Dean Jones
Cam Newton kept fighting
Even when the Buffalo Bills went into a 24-8 lead in the third quarter, there was no quit in Cam Newton. His time under center so far hasn’t come with much in the way of winning football, but there is simply nobody trying harder than the quarterback and this was especially evident throughout the second half.
One drive, in particular, was arguably Newton’s best since rejoining the Carolina Panthers. A lengthy trip downfield that began in the third quarter and went into the fourth didn’t end up in any points thanks in no small part to Zane Gonzalez’s injury, but it was another sign things are trending in the right direction for the signal-caller.
Of course, that won’t matter to Newton.
He cares about winning and not much else.
But it’s encouraging to see some progress and Newton hitting targets in key moments.
Carolina’s loyal fanbase hasn’t had much to cheer about lately. They are now 2-9 after a 3-0 start and another losing season was confirmed with defeat in Week 15.
Newton has at least given them some hope.
A belief that wasn’t there with Sam Darnold manning the plate.
He kept fighting right until the end, which is all you can ask. And now attention turns to what could end up being Newton’s final Panthers performance at Bank of America Stadium next Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
