4 debatable excuses for Sam Darnold’s poor production in 2021

Sam Darnold missed TE Dan Arnold
One of the more promising elements of the offseason period was the developing chemistry between Sam Darnold and Dan Arnold.
The tight end was set to provide a consistent pass-catching presence across the middle that would have been vital to the quarterback’s chances of making a go of things in a different environment. But these hopes were dashed when those in power sent him to the Jacksonville Jaguars as part of the deal to acquire C.J. Henderson.
Now, Henderson might end up being a good player. The former first-round pick is still a work in progress based on his efforts in 2021, but the Carolina Panthers are willing to play the long game in the hope he can make some significant strides in the coming months.
This trade didn’t help Darnold one bit. Removing Arnold from the equation meant there was one less presence in crucial situations and in the red zone to target. Even though Tommy Tremble showed flashes as a rookie, his game is still developing.
Whether Tremble can make a substantial leap and become the complete tight end this offseason is debatable. It might also be worth the Panthers looking for a veteran or another highly-touted college recruit in this area with Ian Thomas out of contract and unlikely to come back.
If they decide to give Darnold one more shot, then it’s absolutely essential. And there will always be a case of what might have been where this connection is concerned.
