4 tough cuts the Carolina Panthers could make before 2022 free agency
By Dean Jones
A.J. Bouye – Carolina Panthers CB
- Cap saving – $3.74 million
The Carolina Panthers have some nice young pieces within their cornerback room to build around. Although it’s vital the organization keeps either Donte Jackson or Stephon Gilmore in free agency to give their secondary a big boost ahead of a pivotal 2022 season.
Jaycee Horn’s return to health following a broken foot suffered in Week 3 at the Houston Texans is sure to be a major asset. One that could mean the Panthers are able to part ways ahead of time with A.J. Bouye before free agency.
Bouye is a former Pro Bowler that did have some nice moments last season. But there were some frailties in coverage and the cap saving of $3.74 million might be difficult to ignore when it’s all said and done.
This would be a little harsh on Bouye. But the Panthers have to free up funds from somewhere and the cornerback could be surplus to requirements if Keith Taylor Jr., Troy Pride Jr., or Stantley Thomas-Oliver III make some significant strides in the coming months.
There is a high likelihood Bouye would not be out of work for long. He is a solid pro with a proven track record and players like that are hard to find in the NFL.
However, Carolina has to make some sacrifices in pursuit of not only remaining competitive but also when it comes to strengthening problem areas.
