Carolina Panthers select Zach Tom

One of the most difficult things to have in the NFL is depth along the offensive line. This is an area in which the Carolina Panthers have lacked for several years to this point.

If the organization wants stability along their protection moving forward, they’ll need upgrades behind their starting front given how many injuries happen in this particular area of the field.

Zach Tom comes into the NFL with plenty of versatility. The former Wake Forest Demon Decan started 34 games at either left tackle or center. One of the things Matt Rhule wants is a versatile lineman in the trenches and he certainly provides that.

Tom does not possess the raw power to maul defenders in the run game. Despite his lack of true functional strength, the lineman makes up for it with consistency as a technician with good lateral movement skills and flexibility.

The prospect has shown the ability to win without the need for strength and the point of attack. Tom might be a work in progress, but the Panthers could bring in a prominent veteran or two in free agency to assist straight away.

While there is still uncertainty as to who the starting center or left tackle will be this coming season, Tom would be a reliable piece for a team with depth concerns.
