Carolina Panthers could target Jimmy Garoppolo

Even though the San Francisco 49ers reached the postseason once again, the future of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo remains in real doubt this offseason. The team’s decision to move way up to No. 3 overall and select Trey Lance in 2021 could see a changing of the guard take place during the upcoming preparation period, which should result in some interest from teams needing immediate assistance at the position.

The Carolina Panthers would undoubtedly fall into this category if Deshaun Watson doesn’t waive his no-trade clause. But Garoppolo does have trouble staying healthy and is considered more of a game manager rather than someone that can take over a contest by the scruff of the neck.

This potential trade would also depend on the compensation involved. The Panthers are not rich in draft assets and risking the No. 6 selection to take on Garoppolo doesn’t seem like a realistic option no matter how much he might be able to assist.

Much like the situation with Derek Carr, trading for Garoppolo won’t move the needle all that much. Certainly not if Watson ends up on the New Orleans Saints with Tom Brady back in the NFC South.

Garoppolo is solid and is well-liked across the league. But this is the situation Carolina brought on themselves and if Watson decides that this isn’t the right fit, then the repercussions are going to be severe.
