Carolina Panthers could re-sign Cam Newton

Finding a productive quarterback to compete with or replace Sam Darnold is still a glaring cloud hanging over the Carolina Panthers. Their ambitious trade attempts for Russell Wilson and Deshaun Watson weren’t successful and unless they are convinced by a draft prospect, it could lead them back into the trade market or even down the free agency path.

Veterans with proven quality are few and far between on the market at this stage of the offseason. Cam Newton is not only the best of the remaining bunch, but he also cares deeply about the organization and provides fans with a belief that simply wouldn’t be there with Darnold under center.

Newton has held discussions about an extension following his sensational return to the Panthers last year. Nothing has materialized as yet, but the franchise has not ruled out a new deal providing it works for all parties.

The former No. 1 overall selection is one of the greatest players in team history. Newton might have struggled to make an impression last season, but it was a difficult situation to come into and who knows what the signal-caller could accomplish with a full offseason to learn Ben McAdoo’s scheme.

Again, this would represent the Panthers tipping their hat, to a certain extent. But signing Newton would not stop them from drafting a quarterback of the future given his age and current status.
