3 attainable goals for Carolina Panthers QB Matt Corral in 2022

Matt Corral needs to start 3-4 games minimum

Probably one of the most important goals for any rookie quarterback is to see the field at some point during the regular season. Especially ones that have a longer transition from college to the pros.

As it currently stands, the Carolina Panthers have Matt Corral, Sam Darnold, and P.J. Walker as their top quarterbacks on the roster.

There are some indications that general manager Scott Fitterer could explore the option of bringing back Cam Newton for another season or trading for either Baker Mayfield or Jimmy Garoppolo, which they have the cap space to accomplish.

For the sake of this article, the expectation would be that Darnold would be slated to start Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns. At this point, everyone has an idea of what the USC product brings to the table, and it’s nothing that would be anything uplifting for fans.

By Week 14, the Panthers may have stumbled to another 10-loss season with Matt Rhule out the door and Darnold’s time as a starter all but through.

Enter stage right, Corral.

By starting towards the end of the season, the Panthers would be getting a good look at how their rookie has developed behind the scenes. There will be an emphasis on Corral to be able to run the offense with limited turnovers and keep the ball clean.

There will also be a focus on showing progression as a player and improved chemistry with his teammates with each start he has. Another key will be how he handles a chaotic pocket and go through his full progressions and read the entire field.

Corral needs to see the field at least a few games this season. This will allow the Panthers to get a look at their third-round pick and possibly explore other avenues outside of the quarterback position in 2023.
