Sean Chandler – Carolina Panthers S

Being a former Matt Rhule college player is something that’s benefited Sean Chandler over the last year. He was snapped up by the Carolina Panthers in 2021 free agency and earned a new one-year deal with the organization this spring despite his production being far from stellar last season.

Chandler was on the field more than he or most others bargained for thanks to an injury to Juston Burris and significant regression from Sam Franklin. There were some nice moments, but deficiencies in coverage proved to be his undoing on countless occasions and it didn’t take long for opposing teams to figure out he was the weak link.

Although Chandler gets another shot in training camp, he appears to have his work cut out given the options already at Carolina’s disposal. Jeremy Chinn is obviously the alpha at safety and he’s got a new partner in the form of Xavier Woods after he was signed in free agency from the Minnesota Vikings.

There is hope Kenny Robinson can emerge as a key rotational piece after flashing last season. Burris was also brought back on a team-friendly deal, but his role will be far different from the starting responsibilities he’s had since joining the team.

Myles Hartsfield can also operate on the backend as a hybrid defensive back. This could leave Chandler on the outside looking in when the final roster cuts are made despite his close association with Rhule from their time together at Temple.
