Carolina Panthers taking things slow with Ikem Ekwonu

After the Carolina Panthers utilized the No. 6 overall selection on Ikem Ekwonu, many anticipated that he would immediately slot into the left tackle spot in training camp. This is a position that’s been a constant source of frustration for the organization and finding a long-term solution was an absolute necessity this offseason.

Despite Ekwonu seeing some action with the first team in camp, the North Carolina State product is being brought along slowly by the coaching staff. Brady Christensen has blindside starting responsibilities right now, but this is obviously a fluid situation that might change the closer we get to Week 1.

Nothing is given in the NFL. That’s also the case for guys drafted at the top-end like Ekwonu and head coach Matt Rhule stated that the player must win the job outright by demonstrating gradual improvement and consistency in the coming weeks.

"“I don’t think we’re bringing Ickey along slowly. As a rookie, you get opportunities, but you have to earn what you get. You have to fight and battle. He certainly wants to be a starter. If he’s going to, he has to battle. Brady’s going to have to battle. And we’re just taking a very long approach here. We don’t need to make these decisions this week.”"

Ekwonu is going to relish the challenge. The Panthers drafted him to be their No. 1 left tackle, but the longer this goes on, then the chances of him perhaps slotting onto the interior with Christensen on the edge becomes more realistic.
