What were some major observations from Carolina Panthers quarterback Baker Mayfield’s performance against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 5?

Baker Mayfield was under the microscope more than ever in Week 5 against the San Francisco 49ers after a disappointing start to the 2022 campaign. The Carolina Panthers got the quarterback on a relatively cheap deal both financially and in terms of draft compensation, but it hasn’t been smooth sailing leading into another critical contest at Bank of America Stadium.

Mayfield was defiant once again in front of the media this week. But he’ll know more than anyone how cheap talk is when it cannot be backed up between the white lines.

The San Francisco 49ers and their No. 1 ranked defense posed another substantial challenge for Mayfield. Something that the signal-caller couldn’t overcome en route to yet another dismal loss in front of a sparse home crowd.

With this in mind, here are four major observations from Mayfield’s performance versus the Niners in Week 5.

Baker Mayfield solved batted pass issues

Perhaps one solace Baker Mayfield can take from Week 5 was an improvement when it came to batted passes. There was more pump-faking and maneuvering from the quarterback, which seemed to do the trick in preventing defensive linemen from getting their hands on the football throughout.

This didn’t come with a win. But on an afternoon where positives were at a premium, this was one step in the right direction and something encouraging for the Carolina Panthers to build upon.
