Which teams could the Carolina Panthers legitimately target for a daring trade-up during the 2023 NFL Draft?

Even though the Carolina Panthers have a legitimate interest in veteran quarterback Derek Carr based on recent comments, it would still be a shock if they didn’t end up taking one of the talented signal-callers entering from the college ranks.

General manager Scott Fitterer has preached the benefits of drafting and developing throughout the offseason. The front office figure also added during his media availability at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine that this could be the year for a big move up the pecking order.

All options remain on the table right now as Carolina goes through its due diligence. But if there is a consensus agreement within the building, then surging from the No. 9 overall selection and into the higher echelons is the only way to guarantee their guy.

Much will depend on how the board plays out, but here are three legitimate teams that the Panthers could target for a potential draft trade-up.

Team No. 1

Carolina Panthers could trade with the Seahawks

  • No. 5 overall selection

Scott Fitterer came from the Seattle Seahawks, so this connection alone could ensure a smooth negotiating process. Even if the Carolina Panthers would run the risk of losing their player of choice depending on what transpires in front of them.

Seattle is also a wildcard in terms of drafting a quarterback. Geno Smith played well last season – but he’s on the wrong side of 30 years old and looking for a lucrative deal – which could lead the Seahawks into drafting a replacement if terms cannot be reached.

Carolina Panthers could trade with the Cardinals

  • No. 3 overall selection

Another team that could be looking to trade down is the Arizona Cardinals. They’ve already invested a significant amount of money in quarterback Kyler Murray, so acquiring additional assets to give up the No. 3 overall selection is something those in power will no doubt consider.

The Carolina Panthers recently acquired Adrian Wilson from the Cardinals as their new Vice President of Player Personnel. Again, this connection between the two shouldn’t be overlooked and might come with smooth discussions if such a scenario came to fruition.

It’s highly likely that the Houston Texans will take a quarterback. Therefore, even going up to No. 3 might not be enough if the Panthers are intent on drafting a blue-chip prospect such as Bryce Younr or C.J. Stroud.

Arizona’s new general manager Marti Ossenfort – who assumed the position in January – stated recently that the Cardinals would consider every possibility. This includes trading their pick for a substantial offer that can strengthen multiple positional groups.

"“The benefit is that we’re going to be ready to pick a premium player that’s going to be able to come in here and have an impact on our team. That’s the benefit. The other benefit is there could be calls on that pick … We’re going to do what’s best for the team so if we get a chance to drop back and pick up additional picks that will help build the team, we’re going to entertain that.”"

If the Panthers did identify Arizona as their likely trade partner, they’d be guaranteed at least the choice between two of the top four quarterback prospects, at the very worst. Something they are unlikely to get if those in power sit on their hands.

Carolina Panthers could trade with the Bears

This is the costliest trade partner by a considerable margin. But one that would guarantee the Carolina Panthers get their pick of the quarterback litter.

A dismal end to the 2022 season saw the Chicago Bears land the No. 1 overall selection. However, general manager Ryan Poles placed his confidence in quarterback Justin Fields after the signal-caller demonstrated impressive growth with a sub-par supporting cast last time around.

Poles will know what the lay of the land is after the NFL Scouting Combine. The front office figure also stated if the Bears were to move out of No. 1 overall, they’d like something sorted out before free agency gets underway.

"“There are some scenarios that might benefit us to move before free agency opens, potentially. But, again, when we get back with all the information that we’ve gathered from here, I think we’ll have a better direction.”"

Carolina’s potential package to move up would cost No. 9 overall, a second-rounder, and next year’s first for good measure. And that might be the starting point.

This has been the subject of fierce debate among the fanbase. But if the Panthers truly believe they can get a franchise quarterback and have to give up next year’s first-round pick to secure him, so what?

It’s also worth remembering that this is a tremendous landing spot for any rookie. Carolina’s first-class coaching staff can nurture them to greatness, so Scott Fitterer must shoot his shot this spring.
