The Carolina Panthers had everything in front of them heading into their crunch Week 15 road game against the New Orleans Saints. Head coach Dave Canales' squad led the NFC South, knowing that two wins over the next fortnight would get them to an elusive division crown and their first playoff berth since 2017.
But as has typically been the case throughout recent years, the hope and optimism were quickly sapped by a demoralizing defeat.
It was sloppy all around for the Panthers. They were undisciplined, and the urgency that saw them topple the Los Angeles Rams had gone. For a team that should have been extra prepared and fresh coming off their bye week, this was unacceptable.
The Panthers are now tied with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers once again at 7-7. They have to play their title rivals twice over the next three weeks, and nothing but winning both will do. That takes on greater significance when one considers they also have the Seattle Seahawks on their schedule, who remain in contention for the NFC's No. 1 seed after narrowly overcoming the Indianapolis Colts.
Still, two defeats to the lowly Saints could be their undoing when push comes to shove. Before that gets decided, here are three winners and four losers from Carolina's dismal reverse at the Caesars Superdome.
Winners and losers from the Carolina Panthers' disastrous defeat at the Saints
Loser No. 1
Lathan Ransom - Carolina Panthers S
This game was always going to be decided by razor-thin margins. That much was pretty clear from a long way out, and a critical lapse in judgment from rookie safety Lathan Ransom proved telling.
The Carolina Panthers had penalty problems all afternoon. One can point to the officiating being far from the required standard, but Dave Canales' squad shot themselves in the foot too many times. And for the second time this season, versus the New Orleans Saints, they paid a heavy price.
Ransom's error was the most critical of all. The fourth-round pick out of Ohio State decided to hit Tyler Shough after he'd already given himself up on a quarterback draw with time rapidly running out. The 15-yard penalty put the Saints in manageable field goal range, and kicker Charlie Smyth came through in the clutch.
One could argue that Shough is sliding too late for anyone to pull out of contact. But considering the magnitude of the moment, Ransom should have been more disciplined.
It was a harsh wake-up call for the first-year pro, and the ramifications could be severe if the Panthers cannot bounce back quickly.
Winner No. 1
Mike Jackson Sr. - Carolina Panthers CB
There weren't many positives to take from the Carolina Panthers' defensive performance in this one. New Orleans Saints head coach Kellen Moore had all the correct answers, and Ejiro Evero's group noticeably tired down the stretch en route to a disastrous defeat.
However, there were a few shining lights amid the doom and gloom. Mike Jackson Sr. was one of them, with the veteran cornerback turning in yet another outstanding display that highlighted just how integral he is to Carolina's plans moving forward.
Jackson was assured in coverage more often than not. He made his tackles count and played with the sort of urgency that stood out in the storm. He was playing so well that it forced the Saints to target Pro Bowl corner Jaycee Horn, which they did with success late on.
The result is all that mattered. But when the dust settles, Jackson can look back on his performance with pride.
Loser No. 2
Trevin Wallace - Carolina Panthers LB
There has been a lot to like about Trevin Wallace's progress since the second-year linebacker got the green dot on defense. Unfortunately, this inconsistent performance was more typical of his growing pains as a rookie in 2024.
The Panthers didn't have to cope with Saints running back Alvin Kamara, who was out due to injury. However, the defensive second level was left far too open, and Wallace's lack of awareness was a significant reason.
Wallace looked a lot more hesitant, especially in coverage. Tyler Shough targeted the middle of the field heavily to get New Orleans back into the game, and it worked. The 2024 third-round pick out of Kentucky also struggled to get to the contact point quickly enough to round off a less-than-stellar outing.
If this becomes the start of a concerning trend, the Panthers will be on the lookout for a top-tier linebacker when the 2026 offseason arrives.
Winner No. 2
Sam Martin - Carolina Panthers P
Punters don't get much love. Their role is minimal compared to those on offense and defense, so most of them go completely under the radar. However, the Panthers have a legitimate weapon in Sam Martin.
The veteran joined Carolina this offseason after a productive stint with the Buffalo Bills. It went overlooked entirely compared to more high-profile acquisitions, but this quickly became yet another outstanding addition from second-year general manager Dan Morgan.
Martin was nothing short of sensational against the Saints. He pinned New Orleans back consistently. One punt was extraordinary, and two of his three attempts found their way inside the 20-yard line.
It didn't have the desired effect as New Orleans moved the football effortlessly down the stretch, but that's not on Martin. The 35-year-old did his part, and one could make a case for a first Pro Bowl appearance of his career after his sterling efforts to date.
Loser No. 3
Ikem Ekwonu - Carolina Panthers OT
Ikem Ekwonu has made strides this season. The formidable left tackle looks well on course to earn a lucrative contract extension from the Carolina Panthers when the campaign concludes, but this was a poor outing from the No. 6 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Ekwonu was matched up with New Orleans Saints defensive end Chase Young almost constantly. He hasn't met the generational hype coming out of Ohio State, but the edge force is quietly putting together an outstanding campaign. And to say he got the better of Carolina's blindside mauler would be a massive understatement.
Young had Ekwonu on the back foot immediately. He was able to push the tackle back, collapsing Bryce Young's pocket with alarming frequency. He shed his blocks on running plays and had enough explosiveness to bend around the edge when the situation called for it. The North Carolina State product had no answer, so a bounce-back showing is essential when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers come to town.
Winner No. 3
Jalen Coker - Carolina Panthers WR
It took a while for wide receiver Jalen Coker to find his feet after returning from injury this season. Missing the start of 20025 was a devastating setback, especially considering the Panthers traded Adam Thielen to the Minnesota Vikings. Still, the efficient pass-catcher is starting to come to life at the best possible time.
Coker was once again Carolina's most consistent asset in the passing game. His route-running was sharp, and his renowned ball skills helped enormously. The former Holy Cross standout made a sensational catch on the boundary. He also secured a touchdown grab after a beautifully timed throw by quarterback Bryce Young.

More importantly, Coker is putting together a prolonged run of games without any further injury problems. If the same trend continues over the next three games, the Panthers would be wise to offer him a long-term extension when his contract expires this spring.
Loser No. 4
Dave Canales - Carolina Panthers HC
Dave Canales called for his players to maintain supreme focus with the playoffs in sight. The head coach didn't want his squad to get caught up in the hype, but it failed to prevent another dismal loss as the Saints swept Carolina.
For the second time this season, Canales was outcoached by Kellen Moore. One can point to his players' lack of execution, but it doesn't change the fact. His defense made Tyler Shough look like an All-Pro once again, and the defensive scheme managed to restrict the Panthers with the same effectiveness as in their first outing, without changing too much.
This was a body blow to the Panthers' hopes of clinching the NFC South championship. However, they are not out of the fight just yet, so fans are going to find out a lot more about Canales in the coming days before a make-or-break showdown with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
