What key traits does wide receiver D.J. Chark bring to the Carolina Panthers after his high-profile arrival in free agency?

It wasn't just former Kentucky quarterback Will Levis that the Carolina Panthers had in their sights on Friday. There was a noticeable buzz among influential figures within the organization at the player's pro day, which was thanks in no small part to another exciting free-agent addition to the ranks.

After a recent visit and lengthy negotiations, the Panthers secured the services of wide receiver D.J. Chark. Although the team wanted the player to sign a two-year deal, he opted for a one-year, $5 million contract with a view to potentially earning a bigger payday this time next year.

Chark is a proven performer that's had some injury issues in recent years. However, there's no denying his credentials when fit and firing on all cylinders, so this is another decent pickup by the Panthers as they look to offset the loss of D.J. Moore next season.

With this in mind, here are three key traits Chark brings to the Panthers in 2023.

Key Trait No. 1

D.J. Chark brings explosiveness to the Carolina Panthers

Considering D.J. Chark is 6-foot-4 and impressive physically, the wideout's explosiveness and straight-line speed are staggering. This was a man that had 4.34-second speed in the 40-yard dash upon entering the league, which is exactly what the Carolina Panthers were looking for after including D.J. Moore in the trade package that got them the No. 1 overall pick.

Chark is a dynamic weapon that represents a nightmare to cover. He can impact the game at all three levels, but his influence in Carolina will ultimately come down to health more than anything else.

D.J. Chark brings red-zone threat to the Carolina Panthers

Another underrated area of D.J. Chark's game comes in the red zone. As stated previously, the wideout is 6-foot-4 and has a large catch radius, which is matched by enough athleticism to go up and get the football from its highest point.

This is something that could prove invaluable to the Carolina Panthers next season. For all D.J. Moore's positives, he didn't get as many touchdowns as his skills dictated - but one could also point to the distinct lack of consistency under center throughout his time with the team.

Chark's physicality and ability to create separation in tight windows should be an asset to Carolina's next signal-caller. Whether it's Bryce Young or C.J. Stroud is the big topic of debate, but having a security blanket like the former LSU star to call upon is sure to ease their transition considerably.

The receiver currently sits on 18 touchdowns from 54 games - 40 of which he's started. Not exactly world-beating production, but it's also worth remembering Chark hasn't been a true focal point for some time - which might change within Frank Reich's system in Carolina.

There was an overreliance on Moore in the passing game where Carolina's previous offenses are concerned. Thanks to the addition of Chark and others this offseason, expect far more balance and variety when the 2023 season gets underway.

D.J. Chark brings swagger to the Carolina Panthers

One thing D.J. Chark doesn't lack is confidence. There is an alpha mentality to his game-day approach which brings a level of swagger that can leave a big impression on the Carolina Panthers in 2023.

There is a fun-loving approach to Chark's demeanor that's hard not to love. This is matched by determination and motivation to make others around him better - so it's not hard to see why influential figures within the Panthers coveted the former second-round selection so heavily once D.J. Moore was shipped to the Chicago Bears.

Chark's attitude - coupled with his ability to conjure up big plays when needed most - is going to make him a fan favorite in no time at all. Staying healthy is key, but all signs point to the wide receiver being fresh and ready to rock when preparations for the 2023 campaign ramp up.

The Panthers now have Chark, Adam Thielen, and Terrace Marshall Jr. as their starting receiver trio. Laviska Shenault Jr. represents a gadget weapon that can line up anywhere, with the promise of further growth from Shi Smith something that cannot be dismissed entirely.

Couple this with the additions of Miles Sanders and Hayden Hurst and the Panthers' offense could be much improved next season. However, this is entirely dependent on their pick at No. 1 overall and how quickly their new rookie signal-caller can adjust to the rigors of the next level.
