Could the Carolina Panthers become legitimate playoff contenders in 2023? There are reasons to suggest they can reach this lofty goal.

After narrowly missing out on the postseason in 2022 and one of the most memorable offseasons in recent memory, there is fresh hope surrounding the Carolina Panthers. A notion that looked inconceivable this time last year when a lame-duck coach was running the organization into the ground.

Fast forward 12 months and anything is possible. The Panthers have completely shifted the culture in terms of infrastructure and recruitment since the previous campaign concluded, which has many analysts projecting them to be one of the NFL's dark horses next season as a result.

Frank Reich is keen to keep expectations to a minimum given the wholesale and necessary changes implemented. But after so long in the football wilderness, fans are well within their right to dream big.

With this in mind, here are three reasons why the Panthers can emerge into legitimate contention during the 2023 season.

Reason No. 1

Carolina Panthers reside in the NFC South

Perhaps the biggest confidence boost for the Carolina Panthers is their presence within the NFC South. The division is somewhat in flux after Tom Brady's official retirement, although every team will fancy themselves as potential winners looking at how things stand currently.

Carolina's aggressive approach this offseason is a direct result of opportunity-knocking. They feel like the NFC South is there for the taking, which could be the platform needed to make some noise in the playoffs if everything goes according to plan.

It won't be easy, not by any stretch. But with Brady no longer controlling the division with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Panthers have absolutely nothing to fear.

Carolina Panthers' situational football improvements

One of the biggest criticisms during the Matt Rhule era centered on situational football. Too many times the head coach was left floundering by his inability to effectively prepare or adjust to what was transpiring on the field - which is always the big difference between success and failure in the NFL.

The Carolina Panthers finally pulled the plug after another embarrassing loss in Week 5 of the 2022 season. Steve Wilks came to the fore as interim and immediately brought a sense of professionalism that was sorely lacking - although it wasn't enough to get the head coaching job permanently after faltering down the stretch.

Frank Reich's experience coupled with David Tepper's high-end investment to mold an elite coaching staff should guarantee situational football problems not only become a thing of the past but can improve exponentially in 2023.

Carolina's strength of schedule is not the hardest based on most analyses. So if their in-game decisions take a leap forward as anticipated, then it might be enough for some fine margin outcomes to go in their favor.

Finding ways to win in clutch situations and reacting well to every eventuality are the hallmarks of every great contender. And who knows, this could be the catalyst that propels the Panthers into relevancy throughout their first campaign with Reich at the helm.

Carolina Panthers have Bryce Young

For all the coaching improvements and intriguing signings throughout a busy free agency for the Carolina Panthers, their fortunes in 2023 and beyond come primarily down to one man above all else.

Bryce Young.

After thorough and exhausting assessments, the Panthers felt like Young was the quarterback to lead this franchise back to prominence. Being the No. 1 overall selection comes with its own set of pressure, so how quickly the one-time Alabama star can establish himself and earn the confidence of his teammates is of critical importance.

Young is poised, committed, and almost robotic in his desire to be the best. His polite demeanor off the field is transformed into a killer between the white lines, which is the X-factor Carolina needs to enter the playoff discussion next season.

Of course, putting such high demand on a rookie quarterback is asking for trouble. There will be some growing pains (no pun intended) and Young's ability to withstand punishment for a full 17-game season is another fascinating element to keep an eye on.

The Panthers did everything in their power to insulate Young and put the pieces in place to maximize his skill set throughout the offseason. If he can reach or perhaps even exceed the level anticipated, then a 10-win or better campaign won't be too far behind.
