Which Carolina Panthers emerged as unsung heroes during the team's outstanding win against the Houston Texans in Week 8?
It was a long time coming, but the Carolina Panthers finally came through down the stretch to attain their first win of the season. Frank Reich is now 5-0 after bye weeks as a head coach and his team looked to be much better prepared for the challenge that lay ahead of them.
There were a few unacceptable moments as is normally the case, but the Panthers never stopped fighting. And when the time came for quarterback Bryce Young to step up in the biggest moments, the No. 1 overall selection duly delivered.
Young will gain the headlines and rightfully so after getting the better of C.J. Stroud. However, there were some contributions going under the radar that are more than deserving of recognition.
With this in mind, here are three unsung heroes from Carolina's victory versus the Texans in Week 8.
Austin Corbett - Carolina Panthers OL
One cannot overstate how vital it was to get Austin Corbett back into the starting lineup. The offensive line did go through some complications - especially on the blindside with Ikem Ekwonu - but the veteran right guard picked up where he left off in 2022 with a decent display after almost 300 days out through injury.
Corbett was understandably emotional after the game, which was a winning return for the former second-round pick out of Nevada. Playing in every offensive snap after so long away and displaying very few flaws was yet more proof of how important he is to the Carolina Panthers and the development of rookie quarterback Bryce Young.
Hopefully, Corbett came through the contest unscathed and there are no more complications on the health front moving forward.
Adam Thielen - Carolina Panthers WR
When the Carolina Panthers brought in Adam Thielen following his release from the Minnesota Vikings, he was seen as a stable veteran presence capable of providing assistance at an important time. However, there were also concerns about how much the wide receiver had left in the tank.
Thielen's proved all his doubters wrong and more over the opening seven games. All he does is produce, which was the case once again versus the Houston Texans en route to leading the Panthers in receiving yards.
While other members of the passing attack had issues with drops, Thielen was almost flawless. And when quarterback Bryce Young needed a big conversion, he went to the former undrafted free agent out of Minnesota State more often than not.
Thielen finished the day with eight receptions from 11 targets for 72 receiving yards. He remains a strong candidate for Pro Bowl consideration and to finish with more than 1,000 yards - a best-case scenario in no uncertain terms.
Young and the Panthers will continue to lean on Theilen heavily until they can acquire stronger reinforcements. He seems to be relishing being a legitimate No. 1 option after so long playing second fiddle to the likes of Stefon Diggs and Justin Jefferson, even if it's not exactly ideal for Carolina given their high hopes for others not reaching the level expected.
Xavier Woods - Carolina Panthers S
Austin Corbett wasn't the only notable veteran returning to the lineup in Week 8. The Carolina Panthers were thrilled to welcome back starting safety Xavier Woods, which instantly solidified the backend of their secondary still missing free-agent signing Vonn Bell.
Woods is not the biggest name and doesn't get the limelight he deserves. However, that does not detract from what an integral role he plays as an instinctive presence and exceptional communicator within Ejiro Evero's 3-4 base scheme.
It didn't look like Woods missed a beat versus the Houston Texans. His positional sense was first class and when the time came to make tackles, the former sixth-round pick laid the wood with his customary efficiency.
Woods has been nothing short of exceptional to start the season despite missing a few games. He looks tailormade for Evero's defensive demands and the player's phenomenal 83.9 grade from Pro Football Focus is another strong indicator of how well he's performing currently.
Hopefully, Bell won't miss much more time and he can resume his highly productive safety partnership with Woods. Until then, the Panthers can relax safe in the knowledge they have at least one genuinely consistent performer at the position.
The performance levels on Sunday got a significant shot in the arm thanks to Woods' return. Others gain more in the way of adulation, but the Louisiana Tech product remains a model of consistency nonetheless.
