Which Carolina Panthers find themselves firmly on the hot seat entering a critical free-agency period for the struggling franchise in 2024?
This is one of the most important offseasons in Carolina Panthers franchise history. A two-win campaign that descended into embarrassment means the stakes are high to avoid adding further disillusionment across the fanbase. They are currently cautiously optimistic despite such turbulent times under team owner David Tepper. But they are not going to be fooled by big talk without substance anymore.
Dave Canales has a lot of conviction when he speaks about Carolna's plans for growth. He'll know talk is cheap after the previous two head coaches made outlandish predictions that rapidly became constant excuses when things turned sour.
There is a lot of hard work ahead leading into free agency. The Panthers have just $13 million in available salary-cap space, so additional restructures and sacrifices are guaranteed. What reinforcements arrive could also have implications on the futures of some in 2024.
With this in mind, here are five Panthers firmly on the hot seat entering free agency this year.
Ian Thomas - Carolina Panthers TE
Hayden Hurst has been informed of his release. Many thought Ian Thomas would quickly follow. Yet, the underperforming tight end remains on the roster heading into free agency.
This has been met with dismay from fans who've seen Thomas blow every opportunity that's come his way over the last three seasons. If the Panthers can acquire another veteran option such as Noah Fant on a decent deal, the former fourth-round selection could finally be deemed surplus to requirements.
The Carolina Panthers placed a significant amount of faith in Thomas when they allowed Greg Olsen to walk in free agency for the Seattle Seahawks. He couldn't meet expectations, so nobody would be shedding any tears if those in power went in a different direction at some stage in the coming weeks.

Bradley Bozeman - Carolina Panthers C
There seems to be growing speculation about the future of Bradley Bozeman. The veteran center is an integral member of community projects and a high-character individual within the locker room. However, it's hard to ignore his performance regression during the 2023 campaign.
Bozeman was more than worthy of a new contract after excelling during his first season with the Carolina Panthers. He wasn't suited to the zone-blocking concepts implemented by Frank Reich and Thomas Brown. Considering this is the preferred method of Dave Canales within his offensive scheme, it's not hard to see why the former Alabama star's future is hanging in the balance.
According to multiple reports, the Panthers are looking to fortify their offensive line interior in free agency if the money works. Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer also revealed that competition for Bozeman is coming. It's a challenge he must be ready for.
It seems unlikely that Bozeman will be cut before getting a chance to prove his worth under Canales. However, if another veteran more suited to the head coach's demands comes into the fold, it couldn't be dismissed entirely.
This would sting for fans who've welcomed Bozeman and his wife Nikke with open arms. But as Canales previously stated, he's got the luxury of removing emotion out of his decision-making process.
Miles Sanders - Carolina Panthers RB
The Carolina Panthers haven't shied away from tough decisions so far this offseason. They've also demonstrated a willingness to take financial hits in the short term to ensure a more profitable future in the coming years. It's a good start, but much more is needed to get the franchise back to respectability. If the new regime feels like it's the best thing to do, they won't hesitate.
Miles Sanders' should also be looking over his shoulder as free agency dawns. The running back joined the Panthers last year and couldn't generate any positive momentum. Missing time through injury didn't help, but seeing his role diminish once Chuba Hubbard took center stage wasn't a great look for the former second-round pick out of Penn State.
New head coach Dave Canales has spoken highly of Hubbard since taking the job. It's been silent in terms of Sanders and his potential role in 2023. This is also a rich crop of free-agent running backs for those in power to consider if the money is right.
The financial benefits of releasing Sanders are remote after he was given an abysmal contract by the previous regime. But if someone else fits Canales' scheme better, the Panthers won't think twice about eating more dead money and removing him from the equation.
After all, it's been a long time since the Panthers did the right thing when it comes to roster building.
Brady Christensen - Carolina Panthers OL
Brady Christensen going down with a season-ending injury after just one game was a body blow. One the Carolina Panthers never recovered from after their complete lack of depth along the offensive line was exposed.
Christensen looks on course to get back in time for organized team activities, which is a bonus. Just what the former third-round pick's role will be by that point is another matter.
While some see Christensen as a perfect fit for Dave Canales' zone-blocking concepts thanks to his accomplished pass protection, the Panthers are reported to be looking for upgrades to their interior in free agency. What this means for the BYU product's future is unclear, but it's something worth monitoring at the very least.
With the Panthers planning to keep Ikem Ekwonu at left tackle, Christensen could be demoted to a swing tackle if the right reinforcements arrive. This would improve depth considerably, even if it's disappointing from the player's point of view heading into a contract year.
Christensen will be taking a keen interest in what additions the Panthers make in the days and weeks ahead. But much like the situation with Bradley Bozeman, it seems like he'll be forced to earn his spot rather than being handed anything outright following his long-term health complication.
That wouldn't have been the case under previous regimes. In truth, it's a refreshing change of pace.
Dan Morgan - Carolina Panthers GM
Some might deem this a little harsh considering it's Dan Morgan's first offseason as Carolina Panthers general manager. But this is not his first offseason as part of the team's decision-making process in recent years.
Morgan was complicit in Scott Fitterer's incompetent roster building as his assistant general manager and right-hand man. This is also why his promotion to front-office leader was met with skepticism. His primary goal will be to instill confidence and let everyone around the league know this is going to be a well-run organization moving forward.
The former Panthers linebacker must also remove the stench of Fitterer from his ethos. Most who've worked with Morgan previously claim he's got a backbone and won't be a clone. But as previously mentioned, actions are all that matter to a fanbase that's been starved of even moderate success in recent years.
This needs to be a gradual process. Morgan isn't blessed with many financial assets and has no first-round pick to utilize. Extracting maximum value throughout and enabling Brandt Tilis to structure contracts with a team-first mindset at long last is another attainable objective.
Some were seeking a complete reset, which is fine, but Morgan cares deeply about the Panthers and wants to re-establish the franchise as one to be feared around the league. That's not going to happen overnight, but the need to hit the ground running is glaring.
