Which culture-shifting head coaches could potentially transform the Carolina Panthers despite team owner David Tepper's toxic presence?

Recent revelations from Joe Person and Dianna Russini of The Athletic placed the Carolina Panthers in a terrible light. Dysfunction, backstabbing, and no cohesive approach were prevalent throughout the scathing article, which is another example of the shoddy operation being overseen by inept team owner David Tepper.

Tepper lost the confidence of fans a long time ago. He is underqualified to influence football matters despite constant meddling, refuses to take accountability for any failings under his ownership, and alienated an entire state when he decided to move training camp from Wofford College to Charlotte this week.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from all this is the need for Carolina to find a strong head coach capable of restoring the culture. More importantly, someone who can stand up to Tepper rather than a bunch of yes-men pandering the the billionaire's every ill-advised desire.

With this in mind, here are five culture-shifting head coaching candidates the Panthers could target in 2024. Whether they'd be willing to work with Tepper is another matter.

Carolina Panthers could hire Bill Belichick

It seems as if Bill Belichick's time with the New England Patriots might be coming to an end. He's a little long in the tooth, but this is someone David Tepper could pursue in the hope it legitimizes his project with the Carolina Panthers.

Most of the names on this list are unlikely to mesh well with Tepper. That's the brutal truth, but it's about time the Panthers found someone capable of establishing an ethos within the building and putting the right football foundations in place for sustainable success.

Belichick would take no prisoners, but he's come in for criticism since legendary quarterback Tom Brady left town. If he's willing to focus primarily on coaching and gets the chance to choose his general manager without Tepper doing anything more than signing the cheques, the benefits are obvious.

Carolina Panthers could hire Eric Bieniemy

Eric Bieniemy is a no-nonsense coach who demands a lot from his players. This isn't to everyone's taste, but one only has to look at his generated success to see what could be accomplished if everyone gets on the same page.

Bieniemy took a leap of faith this offseason when he left the Super Bowl-champion Kansas City Chiefs to join the Washington Commanders. Ron Rivera gave him responsibilities in keeping with those in top jobs around the league, but some within the organization have yet to take kindly to approach.

As someone who also covers the Commanders, this is primarily down to the roster's soft underbelly rather than anything Bieniemy is doing out of the ordinary. He was brought in to shake things up - something he's done effectively while also aiding the development of quarterback Sam Howell during his transition to a starting job.

A culture-shifter may need more head coaching experience. But if Bieniemy adopted a similar approach with the Carolina Panthers, it would weed out the weak, represent a commitment to excellence, and hopefully keep team owner David Tepper at arm's length.

Had Tepper pulled the trigger with Bieniemy before becoming weirdly infatuated with Matt Rhule in 2020, the Panthers probably wouldn't be the league's laughing stock right now. However, there's no telling for such considering the billionaire's influence on football matters and inability to do what's right by the franchise.

Carolina Panthers could hire Jim Harbaugh

The first thing I thought of after reading the Joe Person and Dianna Russini piece from The Athletic on the complete mess within the Carolina Panthers was simple. Jim Harbaugh should be No. 1 on the team's list of candidates to become head coach.

There have been reports that Harbaugh will be targeted after David Tepper overlooked him last time around. Make no mistake, this is exactly the sort of head coach the Panthers need after years of languishing among the NFL's bottom feeders.

Much like the situation with most culture-shifters, Harbaugh isn't universally liked. Do you know what he is, though?

A winner.

He establishes the right mentality, solidifies the foundations, and turns everywhere he's been into a contending force. Whether it's in the NFL or college, Harbaugh boasts the experience and football smarts to get the job done.

This sort of move won't be cheap or easy to lure Harbaugh away from Michigan. But if David Tepper agrees to let him bring in a general manager of his choosing and takes a back seat, it could be the challenge he's looking for.

Of course, that would require some humility from Tepper. Something he's been completely devoid of despite years of complete incompetence on and off the field since he bought the organization from Jerry Richardson for a then-record $2.275 billion.

Carolina Panthers could hire Brian Flores

Brian Flores' time as Miami Dolphins head coach ended on a sour note. His hard-nosed methods especially with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa - played a leading role in his demise, but standing up to ownership was another reported reason for his dismissal.

This is something that led Flores - who was joined by other coaches including former Carolina Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks - to file a lawsuit against the league. Many thought the decision would hurt his coaching chances, but he got a job with the Pittsburgh Steelers and did enough to get another promotion heading into the 2023 campaign.

Flores became the Minnesota Vikings' defensive coordinator and has done well overall. There is a tendency to blitz too much, but his high demands and exceptional commitment to the cause are going down well with the players at his disposal.

Could this be enough for Flores to generate head coaching interest during the upcoming cycle? Time will tell on that front, but this sort of determined figure highly respected by his players is something the Panthers have sorely lacked since Ron Rivera was fired in 2019.

If there's one thing known about Flores, it's that he doesn't suffer fools gladly. He'd also have absolutely no trouble standing up to team owner David Tepper in the hope it could make the football men make football decisions.

This looks like the sort of confrontation Tepper wouldn't welcome. Something reflective in most dictators around the world.

Carolina Panthers could go bold to lure Mike Tomlin

Before we get started on this one, the chances of Mike Tomlin becoming the Carolina Panthers head coach sit between slim and delusional. However, this piece merely outlines those coaches capable of shifting the culture to finally get this once-proud organization off the canvas and into contention.

Tomlin is widely regarded as one of the best head coaches of his generation. He is a leader of men, is renowned for doing more with less, and gets his players motivated through outstanding preparation and speeches that would have you ready to run through a brick wall.

No losing seasons since getting the Pittsburgh Steelers' job is another indication of Tomlin's methods standing the test of time. But some feel like his time with the franchise has run its course - as unbelievable as that might sound.

This would take a trade, complete control of picking staff, and a whopping contract. In David Tepper's case, even that might not be enough for the Panthers to lure a coach such as Tomlin.

It's also worth remembering that Tepper was also part of a minority ownership group with the Steelers that reportedly wanted Tomlin fired once upon a time. That won't go unnoticed, and we should have known then this man was incapable of judging football-related matters with any sense.

Although the benefits would be immense, it's nothing more than a pipedream. Still, it was nice to think about for a couple of minutes.
