Andy Dalton got his big chance to shine after the Carolina Panthers opted to bench Bryce Young. It wasn't the easiest situation for the veteran quarterback, but he seemed determined to make the league sit up and take notice at this late stage of his playing career.

The Panthers felt like Dalton provided them with a better chance to win right now. There was just no telling for sure considering the weak links across the board, but stability at football's most important position could only help heading into Week 3 at the Las Vegas Raiders.

Dalton's last career start was a sensational showing in defeat at the Seattle Seahawks in Week 3 of the 2023 season. The Panthers have rolled with Young ever since, but the performances were nowhere near good enough and head coach Dave Canales had no option other than to completely change the team's direction.

As it turned out, Dalton inspired the Panthers to a monumental victory in the desert. It was an incredible afternoon that brought the fanbase back from despair and got everyone believing again. Not bad for an old guy.

With that being said, here are five major observations from Dalton's performance at Allegiant Stadium in Week 3.

Major observations from Carolina Panthers QB Andy Dalton's performance in Week 3

Andy Dalton's perfect start

If the Carolina Panthers were hoping for an immediate impact from Andy Dalton, they got it. The former second-round selection looked composed right out of the gate, finding his playmakers and relying more on the ground game behind the team's much-improved offensive line. It also saw the first opening drive touchdown in 20 games when Chuba Hubbard got free in the flat and bowled his way over.

Dalton completed 5-of-6 passes for 52 yards and a passer rating of 142.4. There was a long way to go, but this was the morale boost the offense and Dave Canales needed after receiving so much ridicule in the national media for their handling of Young's development.

This was easily the biggest positive of the campaign offensively, and it came on Dalton's first drive under center. It was also a damning indictment of Young's lack of production on his way to a secondary role.

Andy Dalton's exceptional first half

Andy Dalton had no trouble building on his early momentum. He was nothing short of exceptional throughout the first half in Week 3 at the Las Vegas Raiders, the likes of which Carolina Panthers fans hadn't seen since Bryce Young's 300-yard game against the Green Bay Packers in 2023.

It was an astonishing showcase of poise, precision, and putting his playmakers in the best possible positions to thrive. Dalton wasn't flawless, but he was pretty close. And the Panthers benefitted enormously en route to a commanding 21-7 lead at the half-time interval.

Want further proof? Take a look at Dalton's stats from the opening two-quarters of the contest.

  • 62.18 percent completion
  • 212 passing yards
  • 3 touchdowns
  • 0 interceptions
  • 2 sacks against
  • 138.6 passer rating (ESPN)

His touchdown throws to Adam Thielen and Diontae Johnson were perfection personified. Dalton was an absolute revelation and the Panthers looked like a completely different football team. Most fans conceded he'd provide more assured under center. Very few would have predicted such an incredible start.

Andy Dalton's improved execution

Dave Canales didn't do much differently from a schematic standpoint. The plays looked the same as they'd done over the opening two weeks of the campaign. However, the execution was much better with Andy Dalton at the quarterback position.

Dalton was clinical in no uncertain terms. There were times when pressure arrived and there were a few errant throws, but the difference was night and day. The throws had more velocity and the TCU product had full command of the huddle. Perhaps more glaring was the fact everyone on offense was laying out for their new man under center.

This is exactly what Canales wanted. He preached all offseason about wanting the Panthers to be a fundamentally sound operation and play complimentary football effectively as the keys behind this franchise's turnaround. Bryce Young wasn't providing that. Dalton shifted around their fortunes in the blink of an eye.

There is hope, at the very least. That's all fans wanted after so much misery and being the subject of more embarrassing vitriol from the media this week. But this bold quarterback switch so early into Canales' tenure reaped immediate rewards.

Andy Dalton seized his moment

Andy Dalton was given a tough challenge. Dave Canales wanted him to pick up a demoralized roster who were on the brink of mutiny with Bryce Young. It was a test he passed with flying colors during his first start of the campaign in Week 3 at the Las Vegas Raiders.

Dalton wasn't lacking in confidence despite not playing much competitive football of late. It's all about seizing the moment for aging quarterbacks who are running out of time. That's exactly what the No. 35 overall selection in the 2011 NFL Draft accomplished en route to a shock victory on the road.

The signal-caller was in complete control of the huddle. He calmed everything down, kept things ticking over nicely, and took advantage of splash play chances when they arose. This is Dalton's team until further notice and it'll be a long time before Young sees the field in a competitive setting if the same trend continues.

Things couldn't have gone much better for Dalton. He's set a lofty bar for himself moving forward, but his performance was the injection of energy this Panthers team desperately needed.

Carolina Panthers' early vindication for landmark change

The Panthers made a franchise-altering call by benching Bryce Young. Dave Canales and others were criticized for not keeping faith for longer, but Andy Dalton's performance at the Las Vegas Raiders provided the head coach with some early vindication.

Carolina had to figure out if Young was the issue or if there was something more underlying at play. It seems as if the No. 1 overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft was the primary issue holding this team back based on this initial surge forward with Dalton leading the charge.

Doing this for a prolonged period now opposing teams have some recent film on Dalton is the next challenge. But looking at the rejuvenated atmosphere across the offense from the moment he went under center, it would be a surprise if the Panthers reverted to type.

All hope is not lost just yet despite a cataclysmic 0-2 start. The Panthers have life thanks in no small part to Dalton, who rolled back the years to provide Carolina with a sense of belief and collective purpose that was sorely lacking with Young.

Canales deserves praise. He knew removing Young from the equation was going to be met with fury, and he trusted his convictions. Making this switch so early might just save their season.
