There is no more time for players to impress. The Carolina Panthers' preseason slate is in the books and general manager Dan Morgan must whittle down his roster from 90 to an initial 53 by Tuesday's deadline. Dreams will be realized or crushed, which is all part of the cutthroat NFL business at this difficult time of year.
Morgan and head coach Dave Canales are not harboring any sentiment to their decision-making process. Every spot - whether it's starting roles or places further down the depth chart - will be earned, not handed out based on previous reputations. This brought renewed urgency across the board throughout Carolina's offseason program as players looked to cement their status under the new regime.
It's called an initial 53-man roster for a reason. This bears more significance in Carolina's case at No. 1 on the waiver wire priority order. Morgan's made no secret of his intent to pick up good players who don't quite make the grade elsewhere. Some who make the squad won't be around in Week 1 at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
A fascinating few days await. Before then, here is our final 53-man roster projection with final cuts looming large.
Carolina Panthers initial 53-man roster projection after 2024 preseason
Carolina Panthers special teams (3)
- Eddy Pineiro (K), J.J. Jansen (LS), Johnny Hekker (P)
This looked cemented from the moment Eddy Pineiro beat out undrafted free agent Harrison Mevis for the starting kicker job. The veteran is inconsistent, so he must keep the same mindset and take nothing for granted when the regular season arrives. Anything less will see Dan Morgan examine potential alternatives once again.
J.J. Jansen is the team's longest-serving player and will extend his franchise record for consecutive games in 2024. The long-snapper is dependable and a hugely popular figure in the locker room. He's also part of the fabric that made this franchise great once upon a time.
Rounding off the special teams unit is punter Johnny Hekker, who remains a model of consistency. There are no real concerns where the All-Decade presence is concerned despite his advancing years. What comes after the campaign is less certain, but he'll be confident of earning a new deal when it's all said and done.
Carolina Panthers safeties (5)
- Xavier Woods, Jordan Fuller, Nick Scott, Alex Cook, Demani Richardson
- Sam Franklin Jr (injured/reserve)
The Carolina Panthers are gearing up for some difficult decisions in the safety room. Some are locked into their roles while others face an anxious wait to learn their fate. Looking at the options available and how well they've performed this summer, Dan Morgan will be letting some good players walk.
Xavier Woods and Jordan Fuller are the starting duo and look capable of providing consistent assurance on the backend. Nick Scott is the primary backup after gaining the trust of Ejiro Evero in a different environment. Alex Cook's continued progression and ability to come up with big plays make him a perfect depth piece.
A chance is also taken on Demani Richardson over Jammie Robinson. The undrafted free agent is fast, plays with ruthless aggression, and made a strong impact on Carolina's offseason engagements. Sam Franklin Jr. will start the campaign on injured reserve after suffering a broken foot on the Bank of America Stadium turf.
Carolina Panthers cornerbacks (6)
- Jaycee Horn, Mike Jackson, Troy Hill, Chau Smith-Wade, D'Shawn Jamison, Dicaprio Bootle
- Dane Jackson (injured/reserve)
Dan Morgan wasn't going to wait around in pursuit of fortifying the cornerback unit in the wake of Dane Jackson's hamstring complication. The Panthers struck a deal with the Seattle Seahawks for Mike Jackson, who's got some nice coverage capabilities and might be a starting option in Week 1 if everything goes well over the next fortnight.
Jaycee Horn is the alpha in the unit. The cornerback enjoyed a better run of luck on the health front this offseason and looks poised to enter the elite category in 2024 if the same trend continues. Something that could make the former first-round selection a wealthy man with a new deal on the horizon.
Troy Hill is the aging yet dependable nickel cornerback. D'Shawn Jamison's rise to prominence deserves a spot. Chau Smith-Wade's smooth transition ensures the rookie's name will be on the 53-man squad. Dicaprio Bootle gets the other place, at least until Jackson is ready to participate once again.
Carolina Panthers linebackers (8)
- Jadeveon Clowney, Josey Jewell, Shaq Thompson, D.J. Johnson, K'Lavon Chaisson, Trevin Wallace, Claudin Cherelus, Eku Leota
- D.J. Wonnum (PUP list)
If the Panthers want to stand any chance of making strides in 2024, they need to generate more pressure on opposing quarterbacks. This was a constant frustration last season despite the presence of Frankie Luvu and Brian Burns. Both are no longer around, so the onus is on others to step up and provide the pass-rush needed.
Jadeveon Clowney is the established star Carolina will rely on heavily. The likes of Eku Leota and D.J. Johnson have flashed during the preseason. K'Lavon Chaisson also has enough athletic attributes to become more impactful under Ejiro Evero's guidance.
On the interior, Shaq Thompson and Josey Jewell are the team's starting middle linebacker duo. Rookie third-round pick Trevin Wallace looks capable of gaining prominent reps immediately after coming of age during the preseason. Claudin Cherelus could get the other spot, but this is another area where Dan Morgan might target for additional reinforcements.
D.J. Wonnum will likely start the campaign on the physically unable to perform list as he recovers from a torn quad.
Carolina Panthers defensive line (5)
- Derrick Brown, Shy Tuttle, A'Shawn Robinson, Nick Thurman, T.J. Smith
- Jaden Crumedy (injured/reserve)
The Carolina Panthers' front three on defense will be integral to their chances. Derrick Brown leads the charge once again after his record-breaking 2023 campaign that came with his first-ever Pro Bowl distinction. He got a lucrative contract extension this offseason and is keen to make sure the NFL starts looking at this franchise differently moving forward.
Carolina got Brown a tremendous partner at 3-4 defensive end. A'Shawn Robinson came into the Panthers this offseason and looks capable of making a big impact, especially against the run. This should also help nose tackle Shy Tuttle, who didn't perform well last season but is getting another shot.
Nick Thurman's continued development should be enough to make the squad. T.J. Smith gets the other backup role following an outstanding summer. Sixth-rounder Jaden Crumedy is likely to start the season on injured reserve.
Carolina Panthers offensive line (10)
- Taylor Moton, Robert Hunt, Austin Corbett, Damien Lewis, Ikem Ekwonu, Brady Christensen, Yosh Nijman, Chandler Zavala, Jack Anderson, Cade Mays
Hopes are growing that the offensive line can finally provide second-year quarterback Bryce Young with the protection needed to excel. Dan Morgan spared no expense to fortify the interior in free agency. This should make everyone better if some better luck on the health front comes their way.
Robert Hunt and Damien Lewis look like a formidable guard duo. Austin Corbett's transition to the center spot should go well despite chemistry concerns. Taylor Moton remains a model of consistency at right tackle, with Ikem Ekwonu also looking like the player Carolina saw as a rookie over their offseason program.
Depth could be an issue, which is concerning. Brady Christensen and Yosh Nijman are the primary backups and have proven production to call upon if required. Chandler Zavala, Cade Mays, and the recently acquired Jack Anderson should round off the unit.
Carolina Panthers tight ends (4)
- Tommy Tremble, Ian Thomas, Ja'Tavion Sanders, Jordan Matthews
Looking at how the Panthers have got the tight end position involved over their preseason slate, the unit is going to be an important factor on offense in 2024. They've got several options who can potentially make an impact, so it wouldn't be a shock to see those in power take four through onto their initial 53-man roster.
Tommy Tremble's endured a stuttering offseason due to injury but should feature heavily. Ian Thomas' sensational start to early workouts was derailed by a calf issue. However, he's got enough physical qualities to make the team once again and perhaps even improve under Dave Canales' guidance.
Rookie fourth-rounder Ja'Tavion Sanders' encouraging development makes him one of the more intriguing pass-catchers at Carolina's disposal. Jordan Matthews should also find himself on the 53 thanks to his exceptional performance levels and high-level work ethic this offseason.
Carolina Panthers wide receivers (6)
- Diontae Johnson, Adam Thielen, Jonathan Mingo, Xavier Legette, Terrace Marshall Jr., Ihmir Smith-Marsette
The Carolina Panthers have gone from having a questionable wide receiver room to facing the prospect of cutting some good players this offseason. That's a positive step in the right direction, but Dan Morgan must get his choices right in the coming days.
Diontae Johnson, Adam Thielen, Jonathan Mingo, and first-round pick Xavier Legette are cemented into their spots. Terrace Marshall Jr. is reportedly being shopped for a potential trade, but he's done enough this summer for one final opportunity. Ihmir Smith-Marsette's versatility and ability as a kick returner could be enough to secure his place on the initial 53-man squad.
That leaves David Moore and undrafted free agent Jalen Coker on the outside looking in. However, don't be surprised if one or perhaps even both are included ahead of Smith-Marsette or Marshall when it comes to the crunch.
Carolina Panthers running backs (4)
- Chuba Hubbard, Jonathon Brooks, Miles Sanders, Mike Boone
The running back dynamic is an interesting one. Everyone is eagerly anticipating the return of second-round selection Jonathon Brooks, who's missed the entire offseason program as he recovers from a torn ACL. There's no definitive timeline for his introduction, but going on short-term injured reserve could be a possibility looking at how things stand.
Others will pick up the slack in the meantime. Chuba Hubbard and Miles Sanders will shoulder a hefty load until Brooks gets medically cleared. This could be a productive tandem within Dave Canales' run-first system, which also brings the possibility of a fourth running back being included on the initial 53-man roster.
It seemed for a long time as if Raheem Blackshear would get the nod. However, the outstanding impression made by Mike Boone throughout the summer means he could be preferred when push comes to shove.
Carolina Panthers quarterbacks (2)
- Bryce Young, Andy Dalton
Bryce Young looks like a player reborn over the last few weeks. Things didn't go as planned for the No. 1 overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft as a rookie. An improved environment and a clear plan for his development with head coach Dave Canales leading the charge seem to be having the desired effect.
Young's strung together several impressive practices in recent weeks. The former Alabama star also impressed during his cameo appearance in Carolina's final preseason game at the Buffalo Bills. He's got the complete faith of the coaching staff and fans are growing increasingly optimistic better fortunes are ahead for the team's prized possession.
Andy Dalton will be the veteran backup once again. Undrafted free agent Jack Plummer will miss out despite an outstanding effort versus the Bills. He's almost guaranteed to be on the practice squad if nobody scoops him off the waiver wire.
