Which Carolina Panthers news stories are hitting the headlines as head coach Frank Reich reflects on another heavy loss at the Detroit Lions in Week 5?

Only a few expected the Carolina Panthers to get anything from their Week 5 trip to the Detroit Lions. These fears were confirmed as a turnover-prone first half left them in a hole they couldn't get out of en route to another demoralizing loss that casts further questions about the franchise's current direction.

Sitting at 0-5 with a daunting trip to the Miami Dolphins next time out, this team is going nowhere fast and has a lot of hard work ahead. Until then, the stories debate include Chandler Zavala's scary situation, Bryce Young's accountability, Frank Reich remaining resolute in the face of adversity, and a Panthers insider discussing the prospect of trading Brian Burns.

Let's delve into each topic in more detail.

Chandler Zavala traveled home with the Carolina Panthers

Seeing rookie interior offensive lineman Chandler Zavala motionless on the field for several minutes was scary. The fourth-round selection needed lengthy treatment and was handled with extreme care by the medical staff from both teams, with the Carolina Panthers clearing their bench to support and offer prayer for their teammate.

There were visible gasps of relief across the stadium when Zavala put his thumb up to the crowd as he was carted off. After going to the hospital for medical treatment, the North Carolina State product had all feeling in his extremities following a neck injury and was even allowed to make a return home that night on the team plane.

Considering how things looked just a few short hours before, it could have been much worse for Zavala. Thankfully, that wasn't the case, although the Panthers should give him all the time he needs to recuperate to avoid any further complications.

Carolina Panthers HC Frank Reich remaining resolute

If Frank Reich was hoping for the pressure to subside, he was sorely mistaken. The Carolina Panthers were outclassed by the Detroit Lions en route to defeat and giving up more than 40 points, which leaves them as the NFL's only winless team through five weeks and with serious concerns across the fanbase about the future of this franchise.

As it stands right now, the Panthers will be giving away the No. 1 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft. With a tough-looking trip to the Miami Dolphins upcoming before the bye, it's highly likely that Reich's team will be 0-6 before their extended period of rest.

When discussing what comes next for his squad, Reich turned to the team's mantra in his statement via Carolina's website. The head coach is of firm belief that the only way they'll get out of their current slump is by working hard and fighting back in the face of adversity.

"You Keep Pounding; you know, Keep Pounding. You get to this position, and no one envisioned this. And so you have to, this is the embodiment of Keep Pounding. And the only way you do that is if you believe it's going to make a difference; otherwise you just check out. And that's the essence of Keep Pounding. It's a mental toughness that even when things aren't going your way, you go back in, we go back in and try to have our best week of work ever this week because I think it will, I think it will make a difference in me. I think it makes a difference in everybody who does that. And I believe our players will do that, that they will."

One could argue the Panthers need to Start Pounding before they can Keep Pounding based on what's transpired over the last five contests. Unless things change in the near future - especially with three winnable games after the bye - calls for further change will grow among the team's disillusioned support.

Carolina Panthers QB Bryce Young's accountability

There were very few positives to take from Week 5 where the Carolina Panthers are concerned. They were outmatched, made stupid mistakes at crucial moments, and the Detroit Lions had no problem taking advantage to put the game out of sight before the half-time interval.

Bryce Young had some bright moments, but the rookie quarterback missed some throws and gave away two interceptions - one of which was entirely on him. It's not been the best start to his NFL journey, although plenty of problems can be placed on the offensive scheme and having no legitimate weapon that can create separation aside from veteran wideout Adam Thielen.

In fairness to Young, he took full accountability as all good leaders do based on comments via WRAL Sports Fan. He'll also be working hard to get better and will attempt to find some semblance of positivity heading into Week 6 at the Miami Dolphins.

"This is 100 percent on me. There were two times in the game where I took a drive away from us and gave Detroit great position to start a drive of their own. I put our defense in a terrible position, and I'd love to have those plays back, but that's not how this works. At the end of the day, all we care about is winning or losing. We came up short, but we do have to acknowledge the positives so we can build off them. It's hard right now, fresh off the loss, but we have to get back tomorrow and get this fixed."

Young is coming under increased scrutiny, which is understandable considering what the Panthers gave up to secure his services. There does appear to be some confidence issues right now, but the primary objective moving forward should be the signal-caller's development with another lost campaign staring Carolina in the face.

Carolina Panthers insider on potential Brian Burns trade

As previously stated, the Carolina Panthers are probably going to be 0-6 at the bye. This is a complete disaster considering the hopes for an NFC South title challenge from those in power and a reflection of poor assessment of what this roster could muster during the first season with Frank Reich at the helm.

Carolina's vaunted coaching staff hasn't met expectations. So they now have big decisions to make regarding personnel with little in the way of draft capital to call upon.

Trading an established star or two is something under-fire general manager Scott Fitterer should consider. Making a desperate incoming isn't an option - or at least it shouldn't be - but which players could extract the maximum value with no first-round selection in 2024 remains the biggest talking point.

Obviously, Brian Burns tops the list. The edge rusher is still waiting on his big-money contract after negotiations stalled and is clearly frustrated with how the team is performing currently for good measure.

Frank Reich stated after the game that Burns deserves better. But Joe Person of The Athletic hinted that the decision to stick around could be taken out of his hands before the trade deadline.

"Any notion that the Panthers should be buyers at the trade deadline is foolhardy, unless they can find someone (Denver Broncos wideout Courtland Sutton, for instance) who can help them beyond this season AND won’t require much draft capital since the Panthers don’t have much. General manager Scott Fitterer already missed the boat on getting the biggest haul for his Pro Bowl edge rusher. But [Brian] Burns is clearly tired of losing. Those frustrations boiled over when he threw his helmet and came off for two plays after defensive tackle Nick Thurman jumped offsides to allow the Lions to convert a fourth down. Burns said he wants to see things through in Carolina. But with no agreement on an extension and the losses mounting, the choice may be out of his hands."

If the Panthers move Burns, it begs the question of why Fitterer didn't take that whopping offer from the Los Angeles Rams before the 2022 deadline. Also, shipping out Christian McCaffrey, D.J. Moore, and the Florida State product in the space of the year is borderline malpractice.
