There are reasons to suggest the Carolina Panthers might not be an appealing destination for prospective head coaches in 2024.
The Carolina Panthers are looking for another head coach after firing Frank Reich. Based on the recent revelations from Joe Person and Dianna Russini of The Athletic, it's a dysfunctional organization littered with guys looking out for themselves while pandering to the needs of an egotistical owner.
It's one turbulent event after the next. It's been almost a decade since the Panthers were at the NFL's top table and unless the right head coaching hire is made this time around, they'll remain out of contention with a disillusioned fanbase who've been beaten down to the point of giving up entirely.
Many names are being touted with the Panthers' head coaching job. There are only 32 top positions around the league, but this opportunity does look like a tough sell all things considered.
With this in mind, here are three reasons to suggest the Panthers' head coaching vacancy is far from desirable as the 2024 interview cycle approaches.
Carolina Panthers roster questions
There is a lot for the new regime to navigate once appointments are confirmed. The Carolina Panthers roster has very few foundational pieces, multiple key men out of contract, and bad contracts aplenty. They are also facing the embarrassment of handing over the No. 1 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft to the Chicago Bears.
No first-round pick. Not much financial wiggle room once Brian Burns, Derrick Brown, and Frankie Luvu are extended. Multiple upgrades are needed at almost every position group. It's a complete mess.
If someone has the pick of someone like the Panthers or Los Angeles Chargers, it's an easy choice to make. But much will also depend on whether under-fire general manager Scott Fitterer is still with the team when the time roster construction begins.
Carolina Panthers have a meddling owner
This is the biggest reason above all else.
David Tepper's meddling in football-related affairs is enough to put any head coaching candidate off. This could mean the Carolina Panthers are forced to settle for someone further down their shortlist.
Tepper's been a source of failure and frustration in equal measure since buying the team from Jerry Richardson. His bold claims of turning the Panthers into a perennial winner and nothing less would be accepted could have been further from the truth, with no season above .500 under his leadership and far more questions than answers about the franchise's direction.
His constant involvement and overbearing nature when it comes to football decisions are holding the Panthers back. Tepper isn't humble enough to see it - not many billionaires are - but his constant blunders are now reaching the national and international stage rather than just being slammed by the local media.
What up-and-coming coach is going to want Tepper breathing down their neck? Is someone with a lofty reputation like Jim Harbaugh going to stand Tepper sticking his nose where it simply doesn't belong?
Both seem highly unlikely. If Tepper doesn't adjust his approach and make some concessions about his influence in roster building, the chances of top-level options turning them down are almost assured.
Carolina Panthers gig is a poisoned chalice
The Carolina Panthers are disposing of head coaches like old socks under billionaire owner David Tepper. Couple this with the reported toxic workplace environment that was labeled something akin to the Hunger Games, it's not hard to see why the gig could be considered a poisoned chalice.
Fans are leaving in their droves as they reach breaking point. The Panthers alienated an entire state by deciding to move their training camp from Wofford College to Charlotte, and the culture that made this franchise so great during the mid-2010s and further back than that is long gone.
Some positives warrant consideration for any interested party. The chance to build this program on its kneed up from the top down. Molding Bryce Young into an elite quarterback up there with the best around. Enhancing an already promising defense.
That's not a bad foundation from which to build. The problem centers on ownership patience, which isn't exactly stable when it comes to the NFL or the soccer team he also owns in Charlotte.
As previously stated, there are only 32 head coaching gigs to go around. But with many anticipating a bloodbath on Black Monday, there are only so many legitimate candidates to take the franchise forward positively, too.
Tepper humbling himself changes everything. Just don't hold your breath on that front.
