Panthers Add Backfield Help

labrandontoefield.jpgThe Carolina Panthers added some depth to their backfield this afternoon, signing LaBrandon Toefield formerly of the Jaguars.  (Charlotte Observer)  They also add a more physical inside runner.

Toefield (5-11, 235 pounds) has played sparingly as a backup for the Jaguars since getting picked in the fourth round of the 2003 draft.

He has rushed for 572 yards on 163 carries, scoring seven touchdowns by rush and two on pass receptions. Perhaps his best career stat: one career fumble.

He gives the Panthers depth behind starter DeAngelo Williams following the release of DeShaun Foster. It appears likely the Panthers will add another back in April’s NFL draft.

Whether the team goes after another running back in the draft or not might depend on how comfortable they are with DeAngelo Williams as the starter.  Whether or not they believe he can carry the load will be the main question.  Not that I make it a point to disagree with NC’s biggest newspaper.

I REALLY THINK IS PANTHER IS NOT REALLY THINKING ABOUT THE DRAFT BECAUSE THIS DUDE THEY SIGN HE IS NOT AS VERY GOOD BUT THEY MAY GET OTHER RB IN DRAFT I NEVER SEEN HIM PLAY SO I CAN SAY THAT MUCH ABOUT HIM DO ANY KNOW A VIDEO SEENING HIM PLAY ?

  • John White

I’m not sure of video but I’ve actually seen him play.  He got a lot less time over the last couple years because of Maurice Jones-Drew.  He’s a phycial runner and will fit the mold for what the Panthers are looking for.  I think he’s a decent pickup.

Looks like the panthers are getting players with something to prove and want the playing time bad. Thats a good thing too! I think the panthers will address HB in the draft and signing this guy should prove that a 1st,2nd round pick would be a waste with D-will,Tofoo in the backfeild . I would look for a HB in the 3rd,4th.

Toefield is a solid back. At his size, and with his 4.4 speed, he’s a good bruising back. Now, we have to get that offensive line up to bruising status.

I’ve always thought that this guy was the best 3rd Running Back in the league. He is really good, watch some old Jag games pre-Jones-Drew.

  • kfields

i think he is a good addition young, strong, fast and a lot to prove the kid did good on the Jags trust me i kno i live in Daytona beach all u hear about is the gay ass JAGS but ne ways ive watched a lot of games with him rushing he did decent his rookie year and was starting to get on a role then the team picked up jones-drew and wat did u expect ofcourse his playing time went down the hill… ne ways i think he does fit the Panther mold and i defenitly think he will get much better in the coming years now just to work on that O Line and our RB’s wont have a problem.

He’ll have 5 touchdowns by week 8 and we’ll resign him to a 3 year deal while we can still get ‘em cheap…..I hope!!
