Panthers Add Another Guard

The Charlotte Observer is reporting that the Carolina Panthers have added Milford milfordbrown.jpgBrown to the offensive line mix.

They added another Friday, signing unrestricted free agent Milford Brown, who is 6-foot-5 and 330 pounds. Contract terms were undisclosed.

Brown’s signing comes on the heels of the team’s agreement with another giant guard, Toniu Fonoti, on Tuesday, adding to the impression that Carolina wants to get bigger along the line and exploit the power running game.

Brown, 28, has played with Houston, Arizona and St. Louis over six seasons. He had 16 starts over four seasons with the Texans, then started 12 games for the Cardinals in 2006. With St. Louis in 2007, Brown started nine games at left guard, four at right tackle and two at right guard. The Panthers like linemen with that kind of versatility.

If nothing else, the team will have a lot of bodies come training camp.  There may also be a fierce open competition.  Things could get interesting.

If the Panthers are going back to the 2003 format, these guards may turn out to be good pick ups. Toefield may get a little more time than Williams based on the style they would be playing. If they want to run the zone blocking, last year, Williams would be there man, but these wouldn’t be the right lineman

Williams can do anything he just makes ppl miss… i wouldnt mind having power lineman that way they can pancake the Defenses.

With Jeff Davidson’s new blocking scheme that was in place last year, these guards would not work out at all. However if we can go back to our old scheme, Finoti and Brown could potentially shine. Who knows?
