Panthers to Re-sign Trgovac

Yes I said re-sign not fire.  Mike Trgovac said Tuesday that he has been offered a 1 year contract with the Panthers for 2009, and he plans to accept it.

“I’m eager to come back. Things didn’t go as well as we wanted late in the season, but we’ll get those fixed and we’ll go from there,” Trgovac said.

This comes as surprising news as many thought that Trgovac was on his way out of Carolina.  After arriving in 2002, Trgovac created one of the most feared defense lines in the league.  More recently, however, with less talent at the d-line, Trgovac defense’s have struggled.  The Panthers finished 18th in total defense in 2008, and fell apart down the stretch.  The players didn’t change throughout the season, the playcalling did.  Trgovac frustrated many with his soft coverage schemes.  I can’t tell you how many times I saw our cornerbacks playing ten yards off the line on 3rd and 3.  Trgovac needs to change, and with Peppers leaving, it might be the wake up call he needs.  If the Panthers defense doesn’t improve in 2009, Trgovac is one coach that will not be with the team in 2010.
