Panthers Make Trade in Third-Round

Appalachian State Mountaineers v LSU Tigers

Just when I thought the Panthers were finished for today, a surprise pick came in, as Carolina traded next year’s second-round pick to the New England Patriots to select again in the third-round.

With that selection, Carolina took in-state quarterback Armanti Edwards, of Appalachian State.

However, Edwards will be converted to a wide receiver, and could see considerable time on special teams as a punt or kickoff return man, an area of need for the Panthers.

So, it seems that Carolina should be finished with tonight’s draft picks.

Friday night’s summary of picks: Jimmy Clausen; QB, Notre Dame, with the 48th overall pick in Round Two. Brandon LaFell; WR, LSU at 78 in Round Three. Armanti Edwards; WR, App State.

The fourth through seventh-rounds of the draft resume at 10 a.m. eastern and conclude Saturday.

think this is a smart move for Carolina

I agree with you, Kyle. I feel it was a smart move, too. I don’t know a whole lot about Edwards, but I’ve heard nothing but good stuff about him.

  • Jon Zimmerman

At first I was very displeased with this pick, especially given that we gave up a 2nd round pick next year and potentially wasted a 3rd round pick this year (thought we could have gotten him in the 6th)……. but go watch this kid’s highlight real on utube. HOLY CRAP!!! Scary fast!!! I am very excited to see what he can do with the ball in his hands with a Silver helmet on! Go Panthers.

Nice highlight reel, Jon; I think he’ll do well for the Panthers at receiver / special teams.

I like the Armanti Edwards pick, but I was hoping that they would pick up Jacoby Ford from Clemson. 6’0 receiver who is faster than C.J. Spiller. But, I hope they’ll use Edwards the same way the Jets use Brad Smith. Time to get to that D-Line, Cam Thomas from Carolina is still out there, big, thick, no neck having nose tackle

Yeah, there were still some bigger names available at receiver when the Panthers took Edwards. I don’t dislike the pick at all, but he’s more versatile than Ford would have been. I can see Edwards seeing time as a returner on special teams.
