Panthers Add Backfield Help
By John White
The Carolina Panthers added some depth to their backfield this afternoon, signing LaBrandon Toefield formerly of the Jaguars. (Charlotte Observer) They also add a more physical inside runner.
"Toefield (5-11, 235 pounds) has played sparingly as a backup for the Jaguars since getting picked in the fourth round of the 2003 draft. He has rushed for 572 yards on 163 carries, scoring seven touchdowns by rush and two on pass receptions. Perhaps his best career stat: one career fumble. He gives the Panthers depth behind starter DeAngelo Williams following the release of DeShaun Foster. It appears likely the Panthers will add another back in April’s NFL draft."
Whether the team goes after another running back in the draft or not might depend on how comfortable they are with DeAngelo Williams as the starter. Whether or not they believe he can carry the load will be the main question. Not that I make it a point to disagree with NC’s biggest newspaper.
