Expect a bit of trickery this season

Yes it is only the fifth day of training camp, but man it sounds like the offense is doing a bunch of different things that you would have never have seen, and I mean ever in one hundred million years, under the John Fox offense of run, run, pass.

But Fox is gone and some players like DeAngelo Williams seem excited that the offense is opening up.

"“The ‘is what it is’ is no more. It’s time to go,” Williams said Sunday to the Charlotte Observer"

It seems as though head coach Ron Rivera is a bit more open minded when it comes to offensive packages. So far, the Panthers have been practicing a couple different plays, including a reverse, double reverse and wait for it…… an option with Cam Newton leading the charge.

And the most crazy thing about the team practicing running these plays– Rivera and Rob Chudzinski are actually utlilizing the correct players in them. Fox would always love to throw a wide reciever end around in there every once in a while but he would do it with Muhsin Muhammad. Don’t get me wrong, I loved Moose but the guy was not exactly the fleetest of feet and it never worked.

But here it seems like the coaching staff it utilizing the correct players. Newton, not Jimmy Clausen will run the option, Steve Smith, Armanti Edwards and Kealoha Pilares will run the reverses and end arounds. It seems like a DUH!! move but who knows what was going through Fox and former offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson’s head.

Also, I reported it earlier when DeAngelo Williams first resgined but it sounds like Chudzinski has developed a package that will get both parts of ‘Double Trouble’ on the field at the same time. And yes, also possibly allowing running backs including Williams to throw the ball on certain play, kind of like what the Miami Dolphins utilized with Ronnie Brown.

"“The running back is all over the offense, which is pretty cool. I get to utilize my hands this year and possibly throw some balls…inpractice,” Williams said."
