Wide reciever Gettis tears ACL

The Carolina Panthers just found out that second year wide reciever David Gettis has torn his ACL and will most likely be out for the entire 2011 season.

Gettis, the sixth round pick in the 2010 draft out of Baylor, caught 37 passes and three touchdowns last season and looked to have a bright future this season, as he was slated to start next to Steve Smith.

With the injury to Gettis the Panthers will most likely turn to free agent signing Legedu Naanee and Brandon LaFell. Lafell was the Panthers third round pick in last years draft, while the Panthers just signed Naanee away from the San Diego Chargers last week.

This injury hurts a lot for the Panthers offense. With inexperienced quarterbacks, the Panthers offense needs every weapon it can get and Gettis firgured to be a big part in that. The 6’3 receiver showed he had big play ability and figured to be a huge part of the vertical passing game that new offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski loves to use.

The one positive thing for some fans is that this injury will give Appalachain State quarterback Armanti Edwards a chance to shine. Edwards figured to be used more in specialty situations this season, but with the loss of Gettis the second year receiver may now have a chance to have a big impact this season.
