Panthers release Kentwan Balmer

Exactly one week after claiming former North Carolina Tar Heel, Kentwan Balmer off of waivers from Seattle, the Carolina Panthers have released the former 1st round pick. Panther columnist Steve Reed broke the story on his Twitter account.

What makes the move so stunning is that Balmer failed to play a single snap for the Panthers and was only observed in practice.

Earlier in the week Panther coach, Ron Rivera said that he felt that Balmer was an example of a player who was being played out of position. It seems more likely that Balmer just does not have the skill set necessary to make it in the NFL. It’s an unfortunate turn of events, for both the Panthers and Balmer were hoping to begin a relationship where both sides would come out winners. Instead, all that remains is more questions.

We’ll keep you posted on updates regarding this situation.

*UPDATE*- Per Steve Reed: A team source says that Balmer was released due to being out of shape.
