NFL Draft: Grading each Panthers pick
Round Three #77 Overall: Daryl Worley: West Virginia CB
Grade: C
Why: Clearly, David Gettleman had Worley on his radar and was afraid he wouldn’t be around when Carolina’s third round selection came to pass. Concerned, he traded away picks with the Cleveland Browns in order to move up the draft board and select Daryl Worley. Another long and rangy corner, Worley is said to posses great ball skills and will enter camp right in the middle of the cornerback debate. However, his speed (4.64 – 40 YD at the NFL Combine) is questionable and his inability to converge on the run will limit his opportunities if not corrected.
Worley does possess great ball skills and will win when faced with 50/50 balls more often than not, but in order to succeed with McDermott, he must help in run support and disallow additional yardage from short underneath passes.
This begs the question: how reliable were Friday’s additions if the position is continually addressed with only two picks remaining? While Worley does have the size and length that Gettleman was apparently targeting on Day Two, essentially sacrificing a Fourth Round pick to get him may have been too much.
