The middle linebacker position is pretty much already figured out before training camp even starts. There is a guy named LUKKKKEEEEEEE Kuechly who is going to start unless Ray Lewis or Brian Urlacher show up in their prime from the past to the Panthers training camp (doubtful).

Even if they do show up, Kuechly would still be in the running to start. So, in other words he is a lock to be the number one option at middle linebacker. When you lead your team in tackles since you were drafted by them and pick off passes like a cornerback at the middle linebacker position you kind of earned it.

But who will be his back up?

That guy will more than likely be David Mayo. Mayo spent last season as the official back up to Luke Kuechly on the depth chart and played quite a bit of special teams. Fans should look for that to continue. Mayo has the potential to be a really great depth player and could play in spurts at middle linebacker. His biggest knock is still going to be strength for many analysts. He needs to bulk up some to make hits on bigger running backs and wide receivers.

Looking at the invites to training camp I do not see anyone who will be a threat to either player when final cuts are made. Could someone possibly come from out of nowhere to take away Mayo’s spot? That could possibly happen. Is it likely? No it is not likely and probably only a 10 percent chance of it happening. My final depth chart prediction is as follows:

Kuechly/Mayo
