LEFT DEFENSIVE END

Starter: Charles Johnson

The Panthers best move of the offseason by far was the cutting and subsequent re-signing of veteran Charles Johnson. After a down year plagued by injury, Carolina couldn’t keep paying Johnson what he was owed but then found a way to bring him back at next to nothing. While likely eager to prove he isn’t done contributing as a pass rusher, Johnson will need to get back healthy and establish himself once again as an effective edge rusher to keep his spot on the defensive line.

Backup: Ryan Delaire

Another young Panther who could wind up seeing quite a few snaps is Ryan Delaire. After bursting onto the scene with a two sack performance in his first game with the team, Delaire faded and only managed a half sack the rest of the year. A massive, (6-foot-4, 265-pounds) athletic presence beaming with potential, Delaire could wind up taking the starting spot from Johnson if he can prove to be reliable and effective.
