CORNERBACK

(No. 1)

Starter: Bene Benwikere

The position that should garner much if not all of the attention during training camp is at cornerback. After the departure of All-Pro Josh Norman, it appears that third-year pro Bene Benwikere will step in as the team’s number one corner. Of course, in the Panthers’ zone scheme there isn’t one particular player that covers opponents’ number one wideout each down, but when necessary Benwikere will likely be that guy. Injuries have limited his snap count in his first two seasons but he has shown promise and will need to prove he can handle the top spot for Carolina to succeed this season.

Backup: Daryl Worley

After Benwikere, the remaining cornerback spots are truly up for grabs to whoever seizes them. With no rookies standing out in particular, the veteran Robert McClain should get the second outside starting nod leaving rookies like Daryl Worley to be backup. Worley’s physical attributes, play style and experience should give him an edge heading into camp but ultimately it may be multiple games into the year until he sees meaningful snaps.

(No. 2)

Starter: Robert McClain

With the rookies not standing out, McClain should secure the starting spot outside opposite Benwikere. After rejoining Carolina during the season last year, the veteran played well and started each of the team’s playoff games, providing a solid presence. He could easily wind up losing the job to one of the rookies in camp and even if he does earn it, should be on a short leash.

Backup: James Bradberry

The other rookie candidate to potentially start outside is second-rounder James Bradberry. Like Worley, he has the size and play style that fits what the Panthers do defensively. Being a second round pick, it appears the coaching staff is giving Bradberry a majority of the first team reps compared to the other rookies and if he shows he’s a competent option, could take the spot from McClain during camp or early on this season.
