SECOND QUARTER: 10-8, CAROLINA

Two dominant defenses continued to do battle throughout the second quarter. Carolina mounted a 54-yard field goal attempt that Gano bounced off the right upright before the Vikings struck via special teams. Cornerback Marcus Sherels returned the Andy Lee punt 54-yards for a touchdown. Minnesota kicker Blair Walsh missed the extra point attempt, but the Vikings pulled within two. Prior to the half and following the third sack of Newton, the Panthers took a deep shot down the field that was intercepted, the first of three for the afternoon. Carolina only led 10-8 at halftime despite outgaining the Vikings 205-34 in the first half and limiting Minnesota to two first downs.
