Cam Newton was absent from Michael Vick’s top dual-threat quarterback list…

Both Michael Vick and Cam Newton possess the physique and capabilities of being dual-threat quarterbacks, those who can run the football both when called upon or in an attempt to avoid pressure. No one would argue that, but Vick recently released his all-time top dual-threat quarterbacks list on The Herd with Colin Cowherd and Newton was not among the first five.

Even with Vick himself leading the list at No. 1 and current Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers rounding out the list at No. 5, there was no mention of Newton. Others included by Vick were Steve Young, Randall Cunningham and Doug Flutie at numbers two thru four, respectively.

Before going any futher, compare first Newton and the self-proclaimed number one, Vick. In 13 NFL seasons Vick accumulated a career 80.4 rating, 22,464 passing yards and 133 touchdowns through the air. Newton boasts a current 86.1 rating, 21,772 passing yards and 136 touchdowns for a more impressive air game in less than half the amount of time.

On the ground Vick rushed for 6,109 yards and 36 touchdowns, averaging 42.7 yards per game. While Newton’s 3,566 yards on the ground and 38.3 yards per game are less than Vick’s, he is currently behind 50 in the games played category. Even still, Newton has scored 12 more rushing touchdowns for a total of 48 already in his career.

Advantage Newton.

Compared to Rodgers, Newton trails considerably in the passing game but has significantly outperformed Green Bay’s signal caller on the ground with less time on the field. The Carolina Panthers franchise quarterback also compares similarly to Young, but given time will likely match or surpass his passing numbers.

Both Cunningham and Newton also have comparable figures with a slight Newton advantage. Cunningham had 15,399 passing yards, 107 touchdowns and a 71.7 rating in the air attack while generating 3,437 yards and 23 touchdowns on the ground through his first six seasons of play.

Finally, Newton’s current numbers dwarf Flutie’s production despite a 40-plus games played advantage for the former CFL (Canadian Football League) and NFL star. Newton holds a 7,000-plus yards passing lead and has thrown 50 more touchdowns. Flutie also rushed for only 1,634 yards and 10 touchdowns in his career.

Not to take away from the accomplishments of the five guys mentioned by Vick, but if comparing production and especially dual-threat capabilities, the Panthers current quarterback should be in the conversation – if not atop his list.
