Quarterback Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers registered a statement win on the road in New England on Sunday…

Following the home loss to New Orleans last Sunday, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and other players on the team met with owner Jerry Richardson. The meeting subject wasn’t regarding the team’s loss to the Saints but about the protests occurring around the league following President Trump’s comments prior to last weekend.

Newton and other Panthers felt a need to address their platform with the team owner after veteran defensive end Julius Peppers remained in the locker room during the national anthem last week. In New England, Newton and the Panthers sideline stood for the national anthem in addition to the entire Patriots team.

After being “cleared” to protest by their owner the Panthers not protesting – either by knee prior to the anthem or during, came somewhat as a surprise. However, when Newton rushed for a seven-yard touchdown to begin the fourth quarter he paused to raise a closed fist while standing at attention in the end zone.

He completed the celebration with his signature “Superman” move but his message was sent loud and clear. Following the game, Newton offered the following comments to The Charlotte Observer about his gesture.

More from Cat Crave

"“You know, it was to signify black power … I did it to raise black pride because you know I am an African American but more importantly, I want people to see the joy that I go out and play with.”"

Newton not only made a statement in the end zone but also with is play. Many doubts surrounded Newton following offseason shoulder surgery and his poor performance with the offense to this point in the season.

Against New England, Newton completed 76-percent of his passes for 316 yards and three touchdowns. He did have one interception but responded with impressive play following the mishap. Newton also added 44 yards on the ground, including the seven prior to his raised fist celebration.
