Panthers: Shoulder surgeries raise more questions
Carolina Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly becomes the latest player to undergo the knife following an impressive season on the field…
The Carolina Panthers are in the midst of, arguably, their most important offseason since before year one and the questions just keep coming. Franchise executives are currently in search of a new owner and general manager, in addition to coach Ron Rivera hiring almost an entirely new staff featuring coordinator changes in all three phases.
On the field, captains Ryan Kalil and Thomas Davis have already announced next season as their last and expectations are defensive end Julius Peppers would follow, if he even returns this season. Former general manager Dave Gettleman attempted to surround franchise quarterback Cam Newton with explosive talent but only running back Christian McCaffrey survived his first NFL season, as the wide receivers were inexperienced and injury prone.
Linebacker Luke Kuechly removed himself from the Pro Bowl due to injury but at the time many believed it was a result of not wanting to play in the exhibition. Apparently, this was not the case as news was leaked of a shoulder surgery and impending recovery. The surgery is Kuechly’s second in a short time frame but first on his right shoulder.

While this raises the question of his availability during the offseason it hopefully was performed early enough to not impact his preparation for next year. However, knowing Kuechly has had one surgery to each shoulder in addition to his concussion history puts his long-term health in serious jeopardy.
Kuechly isn’t the only Panthers player to have recently undergone the knife as veteran defensive end Julius Peppers also had shoulder surgery last week. While the 16-year veteran has yet to determine if he will play another NFL season, performing the surgery this early could be an indication of his intent to return.
Peppers could also be waiting to hear who will be named as the Panthers new general manager and owner. Regardless, his impact in the locker room and on the field would add solidarity to a team currently undergoing more than its fair share of change.
Expect answers to these questions and more very soon.
