Panthers NFL Draft targets: Quarterback
LAMAR JACKSON, Louisville (6-foot-3, 205 pounds)
Projected Round: 1-2
If new offensive coordinator Norv Turner wants an athletic quarterback as Newton’s back up and the team elects to go all-in early with a pick at the position then Lamar Jackson could be the selection. A Heisman Trophy winner and finalist this season, Jackson is currently being under evaluated but this could change prior to April.
If it doesn’t and Jackson is available in the second round then Hurney could be tempted to pull the trigger for a new backup quarterback.
"Jackson has an amazing skill set with a powerful arm that allows him to make throws off platform that many NFL quarterbacks couldn’t even dream of making. He is tough in the pocket, knows his scheme well, and has amazing athleticism and speed as a runner. Jackson looks like a taller and right-handed version of Michael Vick. Many team sources feel that Jackson is being undervalued similarly to Deshaun Watson a year ago. In speaking with a general manager who scouted Jackson this season, they said, “[The Cardinals] depend on him too much, and he’s trying to do it all. I think he has a learning curve. He will need the right system and right coach, but he’s super-talented. [Jackson] suffers with accuracy issues.”"
