Panthers: NFL Draft history of pick No. 24
A look at recent picks from the Carolina Panthers No. 24 position in this year’s NFL Draft…
Carolina Panthers general manager Marty Hurney has a full plate of things to consider this offseason after recently having the interim title removed from his job description. Depending on your own personal opinion, his previous experience in the role could be beneficial or not, in helping to sort out the roster deficiencies and put Carolina in a position to win a Super Bowl.
While he was responsible for either drafting or adding the current core group of Panthers responsible for much of their success, it takes an entire team effort to win the Lombardi Trophy and Hurney’s expertise outside of the first-round has been lacking.
Ryan Kalil and Josh Norman are arguably his best selections after round one with a few others who have contributed but with 11 years of NFL Draft opportunities, the success rate has not been high. Faced with an aging roster and holes currently in both the offensive and defensive backfield, Hurney needs to make every selection count this year but it starts in round one.
Barring a trade the Panthers will make their initial pick at No. 24 to begin the draft. Fortunately, Hurney has displayed a tendency to make successful selections at both ends of the first round, but what kind of talent will be available when Carolina is on the clock remains to be seen.
For a better picture, following is a look at the prospects who were selected No. 24 over the past few seasons.

2017: Gareon Conley, CB – Oakland Raiders
Conley suffered a shin injury and was only active for two games during the 2017 season before being placed on injured reserve.
2016: William Jackson, CB – Cincinnati Bengals
Jackson missed his entire rookie season due to injury but earned some playing time last season in a relatively deep Bengals defensive backfield.
2015: D.J. Humphries, OT – Arizona Cardinals
The Charlotte native began last year as the starting left tackle for Arizona but played in only five games as various knee injuries caused him to miss a significant portion of the season.
2014: Darqueze Dennard, CB – Cincinnati Bengals
Another prospect in the deep secondary of Cincinnati, Dennard played well when given the opportunity last season.
2013: Bjoern Werner, DE – Indianapolis Colts
Werner played four seasons in the NFL for both Indianapolis and Jacksonville before retiring due to future health concerns and problems resulting from his injuries.
While pick No. 24 hasn’t produced many recognizable names over the past few seasons, three of the five selections earned starting roles. The Panthers need their pick to do the same.
