REPORT: Former Panther Jonathan Stewart to sign with Giants
Stewart is reportedly headed to New York to play for the Giants.
It did not take long for former Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart to find a new home. Tuesday, it was announced he would sign with the New York Giants per multiple reports.
Stewart is coming off a season that saw him navigate obstacles. The emergence of Christian McCaffrey combine with the fact that he battled injuries made for a rough season. Stewart posted a career low in yards per carry (3.4) and rushed for just 680 yards.
This is a great signing for the New York Giants. This gives them more flexibility in regards to who they will select with the No. 2 pick in the draft. The Giants have been linked to Saquon Barkley, and they already have tremendous depth at the running back position. Wayne Gallman, Paul Perkins, Jalen Simmons and Terrell Watson all man the position. Assuming they add Stewart, that makes the group even stronger.

This signing could go either way. Jonathan Stewart could revive his career in the Big Apple and become a valuable veteran piece in the backfield. On the other hand, it could be very easy for him to get lost in the shuffle of running backs. Particularly if the Giants end up drafting Barkley, this could present a problem for Stewart.
On the subject of drafting Barkley, it is interesting that the Giants would make this move if they were going to do so. They already have a loaded backfield, and adding Stewart to the mix leaves little room for Barkley. Then again, if the Giants do draft Barkley, Stewart may be an option to get cut during training camp. Perhaps drafting a quarterback is in the works for New York.

Either way, the Giants made a smart decision by signing him. At the very least, he provides veteran leadership. Now, we will see what he can bring to the table on the field.
