Cam Newton is taking D.J. Moore under his wing. Could this be a lethal combination for the Carolina Panthers?

Being a rookie in the National Football League is tough and Carolina Panthers rookie wideout D.J. Moore is no exception. As rookie camp gets underway, nerves are at an all-time high. However, a certain veteran is helping Moore adjust, and that veteran is none other than quarterback Cam Newton.

Per a report from Jourdan Rodrigue of the Charlotte Observer, Newton has beenhelping the rookie relax and take it all in stride.

“He helped me. … He was like, ‘Man, just calm down. You got it,” Moore said.

The thought of a Cam Newton-D.J. Moore connection makes me excited for the future. The drafting of Moore accomplishes a couple things. For one, it gives Newton more talent at the receiver position. This is something that general manager Marty Hurney really did a tremendous job of addressing in the offseason. He recognized that his quarterback needed weapons, went out, and got them.

Secondly, Moore gives the Carolina Panthers a deep threat they have been missing. Moore averaged 13.9 yards per catch during his time at Maryland. His best season in that category came in 2016 when he averaged 15.5 yards per snag. The fact that Moore is a drafted rookie versus a veteran is key too. Having the ability to develop a young player versus working with a veteran who has been around the block is crucial. This way, the Carolina Panthers could potentially develop a star wideout.

Although there will probably be bumps in the road, Moore’s potential is very high and he has the ability to make a splash as a rookie. JuJu Smith Schuster did it with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Moore has the potential to do that in Carolina. Time will tell if he can be effective in the league but the talent is certainly there.
