The Carolina Panthers should contact the New York Jets…

There have been a few reports circling around the internet saying that the Carolina Panthers should make a phone call and see if current New York Jets backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is available.

As Tim Weaver of PanthersWire.com wrote Wednesday, the Jets have been open to trading away the former Louisville product. It would reunite Bridgewater with offensive coordinator Norv Turner, as the latter coached Bridgewater two seasons ago.

Acquiring Bridgewater certainly would not be a bad idea.

For starters, he is only 25 years old. For Most quarterbacks, they would be entering the prime of their careers. Due to injuries, Bridgewater’s career has seen a multitude of peaks and valleys. Injuries have been a problem for him throughout the course of his career. Mostly notably, he dislocated his knee and tore his ACL during a training camp practice in August of 2016. After a lengthy recovery time, he missed all of last season.

Even still, Bridgewater has more NFL experience than any of the backup quarterbacks the Carolina Panthers have on their roster. In 28 starts, he has compiled a 17-11 record, throwing for 6,150 yards 28 touchdowns and 22 interceptions. His 64.7 completion percentage should also be of note.

With Bridgewater a backup quarterback, what do the Carolina Panthers have to lose? One of the things that would be working in their favor is that they are trading with the New York Jets. The Jets are in the type of situation where they need players to make their team better. They do not have a lot of assets at the moment, and anything they would get in return for trading Bridgewater would probably be put to good use.

Bridgewater would fit well within the offense as he is known to be a mobile quarterback. This would mesh nicely with Norv Turner’s up-tempo offense. He probably does not have as much speed as he used to, but he can probably still get the job done.

For the Carolina Panthers, they would probably not have to give much up at all in order to acquire Bridgewater. The Jets already have their starting quarterback of the future (at least they hope) in Sam Darnold. Bridgewater is just merely filling a spot on their roster. If he was more than that, they probably would not want to trade him away.

The Carolina Panthers have virtually nothing to lose and a lot to gain, especially if they solidify the No. 2 quarterback spot. It would not hurt to at least make the call.
