This is not the news the Carolina Panthers wanted to hear…

This is not the type of news Carolina Panthers fans like to hear. Saturday, right tackle Daryl Williams was carted off the field during practice with a knee injury.

Per Stephen Igoe of 247Sports, this injury occurred during a team drill. Williams screamed in pain and fell to the ground and was quickly surrounded by teammates, including veterans who took a knee out of respect.

The Carolina Panthers better hope this injury is not serious. The team already has question marks heading into camp and losing a player of Williams’ caliber would be terrible.

To make matters worse for Williams, he is entering a contract year. Back in June, it was reported that Williams and the team were facing a “monster financial gap” and were not close at all in contract negotiations.

Playing devil’s advocate here, what if Williams cannot come back? He will not have as much leverage in contract negotiations. That may work in the Carolina Panthers favor, but it certainly does not work in his favor.

Williams was one of the many bright spots last season. Starting in all 16 games, he showed he was an “iron man’ playing every offensive snap. His stellar play earned him second-team All-Pro honors. This was nothing new for Williams as he showed the same kind of durability as an Oklahoma Sooner. He was named to the All-Big-12 first-team in 2014 for his efforts.

He was drafted by the Panthers in the fourth round, pick No. 102 overall in the 2015 Draft.

If he is able to come back, that would certainly be great news. Even still, will he be able to come back at 100%? If he is not able to come back, that puts the Carolina Panthers in a very tough spot. They already have problems at the left guard position, and now they may have an issue at right guard.

If there is one bright spot to this unfortunate situation, it is that Taylor Moton is Williams’ backup at the position. Moton has experience and when a backup has experience that is certainly a bonus.

Either way, this injury should be concerning for Carolina Panthers fans. With already too much uncertainty on the offensive line, the last thing the team needed was another injury there. Hopefully, it’s the type of injury that just requires ice and Williams can get back on the field.

At the moment however, it does not sound like this is just a minor bump and bruise.
