Offensive lineman Brendan Mahon impressing in camp
The Carolina Panthers could have a stud on their hands…
The Carolina Panthers may have something in former Penn State offensive lineman Brendan Mahon. The undrafted rookie is making a name for himself over the course of training camp, and that continued on Wednesday.

Per Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer, Mahon worked at left guard along with Ryan Kalil. As Jourdan Rodrigue of the Charlotte Observer noted, head coach Ron Rivera was very interested in the results from that position.
Mahon could be a player to watch as he looks to make it onto the roster. With the injury to Daryl Williams forcing Taylor Moton to move to right tackle, he could have a chance at playing time.
It is not as if Mahon lacks skill. If anything, his collegiate resume says otherwise. Particularly in his junior season of 2016, he turned some heads. He was selected to the Pro Football Focus All-Big Ten first team as well as three separate Pro Football Focus Teams of the Week. All in the month of October, he won the accolades for his performances against Minnesota on October 1, Maryland on October 8, and Ohio State on October 22.
Depending on how the offensive line shakes up for the Carolina Panthers, he could prove to be a vital piece to what is turning out to be a very complex puzzle. Kalil is going to be the starter of course, but if Mahon can come in and play at a moment’s notice, that would be a great thing for the team.
It sounds as though the former Nittany Lion is working hard in Spartanburg. That bodes well for his future with the team. A guy that can play hard and with consistency is exactly what head coach Ron Rivera is looking for.
"“More so than anything else, it’s being very consistent,” Rivera said this week. “I know I’ve used that word a lot in the past as well, but I just think that’s probably the biggest thing. You can’t have a guy come out and make a lot of mistakes. You can’t have a guy who is going to be explosive one play and then be confused the next. You want a guy to be very, very consistent and then add the rest of the parts together.”"
This would be huge for the Carolina Panthers if they could find a quick fix at the left guard position. Especially if it comes in-house, that would be an added bonus.
It just goes to show that it never hurts to take a flyer on anyone that you feel can help the team.
