The Carolina Panthers rookie is emerging from the pack….

It is always fun when training camp gets underway and players make themselves known with their play from the get-go.

One of those players that fits the mold for the Carolina Panthers is Marquis Haynes. The rookie out of Ole Miss has been getting snaps at defensive end, a crowded position when you factor in the presences of Mario Addison and Wes Horton. Together along with Daeshon Hall, Haynes has made some noise in camp.

Monday, Jourdan Rodrigue of the Charlotte Observer put together a training camp mailbag as the first week of practices came to a close last week.

"Haynes looks really fast, like I mentioned in the spring. He also has been dropping into coverage in defensive coordinator Eric Washington’s “Joker” package."

In the meantime, Washington has been pleased with the progress of Haynes. When he gets to the line of scrimmage, it is almost as if he becomes larger than life. Even with some teachable moments mixed in, Washington has been pleased with the way Haynes has played as he told Max Henson of Panthers.com on Monday.

"“Outstanding,” defensive coordinator Eric Washington said. “On the line of scrimmage he’s played big. That’s the best way to describe it.”"

This has to be encouraging news for the Carolina Panthers. The defensive end position is fairly strong already, anchored by Mario Addison. With Horton looking to make an impact and Haynes coming on strong, this could certainly be a position of strength for the team.

I know I refer to this a lot, particularly when talking about Donte Jackson and Rashaan Gaulden, but coming from an SEC school gives players an edge. Haynes is no exception to the rule, and it is worth noting he put up impressive numbers while he was there thanks in part to his speed.

While he was at Ole Miss, he put together four impressive seasons that really showcased his talents. Totaling 172 tackles and 32 sacks, he was a monster on the defensive line for the Rebels.

It appears that the Carolina Panthers are beginning to see some of that here in the early stages of training camp. Any depth is good depth, particularly on a defense that has a ton already. If the Carolina Panthers can get a positive level of production out of Haynes, that would be another win on the part of Marty Hurney and this draft class.

Next. Samuel and Cox return to practice. dark

It will be interesting to see if other relative unknowns step up and make a name for themselves. It’s all part of the fun of training camp.
