The former Utah State product played in 14 games last season, starting 10 of them. This could be viewed as a continuation of a positive trend during his rookie season of 2016. That year, he appeared in nine games, starting five of them.
As Jourdan Rodrigue of the Charlotte Observer pointed out, this is a huge signing for the team. It gives them depth behind Ryan Kalil, and also helps alleviate the loss of Amini Silatolu.
Rodrigue noted that Larsen will probably get some snaps on Thursday, although Kaili is still set to be the starter.
This was a great signing on the part of the Carolina Panthers. With how dire the offensive line’s situation has gotten over the past couple of days, any insurance that can be added to the line is a definite bonus.
At the very least, it provides the position with some continuity moving forward. Perhaps the best part about this is that Larsen was on an upward trajectory. He played a bit in 2016, and then really blossomed in 2017. Now, it appears he is going to get the opportunity to really make a name for himself as he looks to help stabilize the offensive line over the course of the next couple of years.
He should be able to see the field a bit. Kalil may need a break at certain points in a game and Larsen is the type of player that you can put into a game and not feel apprehensive about doing so. Although he does not have the veteran status of a player like Kalil, he still has been in the game long enough where he can still make a sizeable impact.
It will be interesting to see if the Carolina Panthers will continue to address this position further or if they feel comfortable with what they have on the roster. At the very least, this move locks up one of the better offensive lineman they have on their roster. This was a necessary move to help patch up a dire situation.
