Taylor Heinicke

Although Heinicke has been a backup for the majority of his career in the National Football League, he did not show it on Thursday.

He went 7-of-9 on the evening, throwing for 121 yards and a touchdown in which Elijah Hood was on the receiving end. Although there were some instances in which he could have made better decisions, he played solidly. This is an extremely important development as the Carolina Panthers need someone to replace Derek Anderson. Face it, Anderson was one of the better backup quarterbacks in the league, and replacing him is not an easy task. Fortunatley, Heinicke appears to be helping close the gap left by Anderson’s departure.

If anything, Heinicke showed that the Carolina Panthers made a good decision to let Anderson walk. Now, with Garrett Gilbert playing well last night, there may be a backup quarterback competition brewing. It is not too often you have one of those, but it is a good problem to have. It will be interesting to see if Henicke continues to play at a high level in the coming weeks.
